Dive Into a Summer of Great Books! by Amelia Bainbridge, Communications & Donor Relations Coordinator, St. Thomas Public Library School is almost out, and that means it’s time to get excited for the St. Thomas Public Library’s TD Summer Reading Club! This year, we want to help kids explore our shelves to find new stories that are just as fun as their favourite series. How do you help a young reader find a new book when they have already finished all the Dog Man, Diary of a Wimpy Kid , or Babysitters Club books? Library staff use two tricks called read-alikes and appeal terms . A read-alike is a book that is very similar to one you already love. Appeal terms are words that describe the feeling of a book, like funny, action-packed , or mysteriou s. If you know your child loves books that make them laugh, you can look for other ‘funny’ books to find a new favourite. Our goal this summer is to make it easy and fun to find these new stories. We will have fun activities and programs all summer long to help kids discover books they never knew existed! Participating in the TD Summer Reading Club is a great way to keep those reading skills sharp for the next school year. Plus, reading all summer will earn kids ballots to win awesome prizes! All they need to do is visit the library and let staff know a little bit about what they are reading. It’s not about how much they read, but about building a great habit. Registration for Summer Reading Club starts on Friday, June 26. You can sign up that day or any time throughout the summer! Be sure to look for us in city parks and at local festivals all summer long, too. Fun for All Ages We have summer reading challenges for teens and adults, too! We want everyone to enjoy the habit of reading. • Adults (18+): Come to the library to pick up a Bookish Bingo card. Work on filling it up all summer for a chance to win prizes. • Teens (13–19): Follow our weekly reading challenge on social media or visit the library to participate and win prizes.
No matter your age, your library is here to make it a great summer of reading. We can’t wait to see you!
