By James O. Henry Chairman , History Department , BIOLA College Teaching Machine To Be Ready In 1961 Teaching machines are expected to be ready for schools on a limited basis in two years and on an unlimited one in five according to Dr. B. F. Skinner of Harvard, a developer of the elec tronic devices. According to Dr. Skin ner the machines ask questions of a student. If a correct answer is provid ed the machine offers new informa tion. If a wrong answer is given the machine moves back to simpler ma terial. With these machines, Dr. Skin ner said, pupils will learn in one hour what it takes a human teacher a whole day to teach them in laborious classroom instruction. While the machine teaches the child at his own pace to add, subtract, read, write, spell and do other factual tasks, the teacher will be doing what he has often been criticized for not doing, Dr. Skinner asserted. Music Said to Spur The Growth of Plants Flutes instead of chemicals may be plant growth regulators of the future. The farm of 1960 may have a phono graph in every cornfield, making the plants grow bigger and better. Plants respond to recorded music with signi ficant growth increases, an Indian scientist told the Ninth International Botanical Congress meeting recently in Montreal, Canada. For a half-hour daily, native climbing shrubs of the Pathos family “listened” to recorded flute music. They listened every day for thirty days to the piece played by a leading Indian flutist, Dr. Stella . Ponniah. The same number of plants of “almost the same vigor and height” were grown without the benefit of music as a control for the experiment. At the end of the experiment, extra ordinary increases in plant growth were observed, Dr. Ponniah said. Russians Find New Use for Vodka Maybe the Russians should peddle this skin lotion to thaw the “cold war,” the UPI says. The Glycerine Producers’ Association reports that a Soviet woman’s magazine, “Robotni- tsa” (Woman Worker), offered this suggestion on skin care: “It is desire- able to rub the skin once or twice a day with fortifying substances, e.g. 2 g. hydrochloric acid. 10 g. glycerine, 70 g. mint water and 30 g. vodka.”
