A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF KSU
I am delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Master of Science in Healthcare Management and Informatics (MSHMI) program in the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University! Founded in 2015, MSHMI became the state of Georgia’s first interdisciplinary healthcare management and informatics graduate degree. Like the origins of KSU itself, MSHMI was created to meet a specific need in the workforce— supporting Georgia’s healthcare technology ecosystem—and has since grown and continued to thrive thanks to an intrinsic commitment to student success. Since its launch, MSHMI has enhanced KSU’s reputation nationally and globally. The program now extends around the world, representing approximately 500 students across diverse professional backgrounds, over 100 industry projects, endowed scholarships, multiple industry fellowships, thousands of research dollars and grants from federal and industry partners, awards and recognitions, and prestigious accreditations. successfully created a robust and skilled workforce pipeline. Our graduates are armed with a powerful understanding of how data and technology impact healthcare delivery and practice Most importantly, MSHMI has in the 21st century. They are making their mark in health systems, medical practices, pharmaceuticals, technology companies, public health departments, and startups.
I am proud to have been serving as the Coles College dean when the program was launched and even prouder to see the strides the program has made in its first decade. I offer my sincerest thanks and congratulations to Dr. Sweta Sneha, professor and executive director of MSHMI, to Coles College Dean Robin Cheramie, and to the dedicated faculty and staff of the program for reaching this milestone.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF THE COLES COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
When I reflect on the success of the Master of Science in Healthcare Management program, I am awed by the wide variety of professional backgrounds on display among the students and alumni. Kennesaw State University and the Coles College have developed a truly interdisciplinary program that attracts students from several different fields, all brought together by a desire to enhance patient healthcare out-comes through information and data. Among the students graduating this year alone are doctors, nurses, medical assistants and other professionals working in the healthcare industry. However, the graduating class also includes an entrepreneur, a paraprofessional, and even a career counselor for the U.S. Army Reserves. Few degrees bring so many kinds of professionals together. The MSHMI program continues to attract top-tier students thanks in no small part to the growing net-work of industry partners that have pledged their support to its mission and goals. Our partners are directly involved in every aspect of the program from developing the curriculum and creating professional development opportunities to sponsoring student research projects aimed at solving real-world digital healthcare challenges. As the MSHMI program prepares to welcome its 10th cohort this fall, I look forward to seeing how this new generation of leaders will leave their mark on the ongoing digital healthcare transformation.

As we get ready to mark the 10th year anniversary of Kennesaw State University’s Master of Science in Healthcare Management and Informatics (HMI) program – which has grown from local to global with a footprint that extends across US, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Canada – I am thankful to our industry partners, board members, students, faculty, staff and KSU leaders who contributed to HMI’s growth. Your advocacy and partnership is integral to our success. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence, digital plays a key role in contemporary healthcare with critical need for a skilled workforce ready to lead transformations in healthcare delivery and practice. As the Executive Director, my vision for HMI is to be the academic partner developing the next generation of the workforce ready to contribute to the growth in digital health. I am thankful for how the past decade has unfolded and energized for the next decade of strategic partnerships leading to relevant research, impactful innovations, and robust education. Success is something few people achieve on their own. Behind every leader, innovator, or entrepreneur is a team of cheerleaders – advocates, sponsors, mentors, family, friends - who helped them along their journey and inspire them to reach their full potential. As I ask you to support Kennesaw State’s Master of Science in Healthcare Management and Informatics program, what I’m really asking is for you to be that cheerleader for the students. Your help provides advocacy, mentorship, and closes the financial gap for our students. More importantly, it creates a circle of gratitude where graduates give back by becoming mentors for the next generation, lifting them along the way.
When I moved to the United States from India in 1996 to study computer science at the University of Maryland, there were only a handful of women in my class. That number shrank into single digits by the time I graduated. When I began working as a technology and management consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, I saw the same gender disparity. As a woman of color living in a new country and working in a male-dominated technology industry, it was easy to feel like I didn’t belong. I was proud of my accomplishments, but I saw nothing explaining why I should be an anomaly. It dawned on me that the reason so few women work in technology isn’t a lack of aptitude; it’s that they have a scarcity of role models, mentors, and sponsors showing them that they can.

I knew I wanted to be that role model, but I wasn’t sure exactly what route to take. But, after several years in the corporate world working for PricewaterhouseCoopers in management consulting, advice from one of my former teachers at Georgia State University led me to earn a Ph.D. from the Robinson College of Business. This started my journey as an Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University, where I found my true calling. While one mentor helped me get onto the academic path, it was Kennesaw State’s current president Kat Schwaig who has been my biggest sponsor, setting me on the path to impacting the workforce and economic development in Georgia’s health-tech ecosystem by launching the first-of- its-kind MSHMI program. In 2009, I was a tenure- track assistant professor when Kat, who was a dean at the time, recommended me to sit on the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce’s healthcare IT leadership council. Through these 7:30 am meetings in downtown Atlanta, I was able to work with several leaders in Georgia’s healthcare and tech worlds. Then-Gov. Casey Cagle asked the chamber to help grow the state’s healthcare IT workforce and I had an idea. I took my plans to Kat for a novel graduate degree that addresses the challenge of creating a health informatics workforce, and she gave unwavering support. Suddenly the wheels were turning and the vision took flight. She cleared roadblocks, allocated resources, and advocated for me and the program at every step of the process – she exemplified servant leadership and much of who I am today is because of her advocacy. Today, thanks to the many people who believed in me, the reach and impact of our program continues to grow across national boundaries spreading into Europe, Africa, and Asia. I’m watching hundreds of individuals go through our program and succeed as leaders and innovators in the digital healthcare domain. Over the past decade since the launch of the program, our work has been validated by the
industry with awards and recognitions I could have only dreamt of. I’m truly honored and privileged to have recently been named Women in Technology’s Woman of the Year for STEAM Education; Technology Association of Georgia’s Tech Leader of the Year, and named a member of TITAN 100 (the most impactful leaders in Georgia. She also received the Outstanding Leadership Award at the Health 2.0 conference and the Outstanding Contributions for Health Informatics award from AMIA.. The program also received accreditation for the Digital Health Leadership Certificate from CAHIIM. With every success comes a responsibility to be the voice for the voiceless. None of my success would have been possible without support from the army of men and women who hold me high, believed in me, and inspired me to shatter glass ceilings. I hope you will join me in supporting the next generation of healthcare IT leaders and in giving opportunities to succeed to the mentors, advocates and cheerleaders of tomorrow.

SPEAKERS KEYNOTE Aashima Gupta - Google
Aashima Gupta serves as the Global Director of the Healthcare Vertical at Google Cloud and leads the strategy and solutions for the healthcare industry. She has extensive experience in developing and executing global strategies, leading cross-functional teams, and fostering strategic partnerships. Aashima founded the vertical and drove significant growth in Google Cloud's healthcare business by securing key partnerships and delivering impactful solutions. She serves on the joint steer comm of Ascension Health, Mayo Clinic and HCA. Before joining Google Cloud, Aashima founded and led the Healthcare Vertical and interoperability initiatives at Apigee, advocating for Open Data and the use of APIs to overcome healthcare data silos. Previously, at Kaiser Permanente, she oversaw digital health incubations, spear-heading innovations in chronic condition management, including collaborations with EPIC and integrations with workflows. Aashima holds two patents in computer science and remains passionate about leveraging technology to improve patient care and advance healthcare accessibility.
Dr. Shawn Little - University System of Georgia
Dr. Shawn Little is the Associate Vice Chancellor of Healthcare Education for the University System of Georgia. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Chamberlain University and her Master of Science in Nursing in Education from Walden University. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Kennesaw State University. Dr. Little has advocated to fill gaps in the healthcare workforce and has been actively involved with state legislation and removing barriers for those wishing to enter a caring career field. In addition, Little has served in leadership roles with the Georgia Association of Nursing Deans and Directors, Georgia Nurses Association, Georgia Nurses Foundation, and the Georgia Nurses Leadership Coalition. Dr. Little has dedicated her career to developing programs that support and empower nurses.

Candice Saunders - Wellstar Health Systems
Candice L. Saunders is president and CEO of Wellstar Health System, based in Marietta, Ga., and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). As president and CEO of one of the largest and most integrated health systems in Georgia, Saunders provides leadership for the 31,000 team members that oversee the health and well-being of people and communities across the state. Under Saunders’ leadership, Wellstar has been recognized as a leader in safety and quality measures, and as a great place to work.
Saunders, who began her career as a critical care nurse, joined Wellstar as president of Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in May 2007. As a result of her experience and strong leadership, she was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer for Wellstar Health System in 2013. In 2015, she assumed the role of president and CEO. Saunders has built her career around improving community access to vital healthcare needs, implementing new care models and programs to address consumer health issues, and integrating health delivery processes to improve operational efficiencies and enhance the patient and team member experience. From the boardroom to the operating room, and across Wellstar Health System, Saunders is a champion for delivering world-class healthcare for every person, every time. Saunders served on the American Hospital Association (AHA) Board of Trustees and as chair of AHA’s Regional Policy Board (RPB) for Region 4, the Vizient Southern States Board of Directors, and the Georgia Hospital Association where she also served as Chair. She remains engaged in not-for- profit and philanthropic organizations through her service on the Coalition to Strengthen America’s Healthcare Board of Directors, the Metro Atlanta Chamber Board of Directors, Cobb Chamber Executive Board, Kennestone State University Foundation Board of Trustees, and University of South Florida School of Nursing Board of Advisors. She also serves on the Engage Board of Directors. Saunders has been recognized by numerous organizations for her leadership and has been named to Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Women Leaders and Top 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives, Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Most Admired CEOs lists, and Becker’s Hospital Review’s list of Women Hospital Presidents and CEOs to Know and Great Leaders in Healthcare lists. In 2022, she was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as the Most People-Focused CEO and by Modern Healthcare as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare. She has been honored as one of The 25 Most Influential Atlantans by The Atlantan Magazine and a Woman of Distinction by Atlanta Magazine, Healthcare Champion by the National Association of Female Executives and was a recipient of the W. Daniel Baker Leadership Award by the Georgia Hospital Association. Saunders has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of South Florida and master’s degrees in business administration and health services administration from the University of Alabama- Birmingham. She and her husband Don live in Cobb County and have two adult sons.

We first got involved with the HMI program to do a research project on technology in the real world of employee health and wellness. Eventually, that relationship grew into applying for a grant together, and now pursuing many other partnerships.
