First built in 1946 during the French colonial period, Coconut Prison served as a detention centre for Vietnamese political prisoners and POWs until 1975. This infamous site is also known as the ‘Tiger Cage’, a term that reflects the inhumane interrogation methods employed here. The ‘Tiger Cage’ method involved severe torture and has left a haunting legacy, marking Coconut Prison as one of the most brutal prisons in Vietnam, alongside the notorious Hanoi Hilton. The prison stands as a poignant reminder of the struggles endured by many, encapsulating a significant chapter in Vietnam’s history.
