We were awed by the spectacle of costumes on display during the Year 11 Dress Up Day on Tuesday, joyfully remembered the past five years with our wonderful Year 11 pupils in Wednesday’s Final HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

~ Ms Tongue, Headteacher Next week we look forward to welcoming a Swedish Choir to the school who are visiting from Gothenburg. Our Year 9 pupils will also be taking part in two training days in school as part of their preparations for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. May I remind parents that we are still welcoming applications for the role of parent governor. Celebration Assembly and faced the start of GCSE exams on Thursday. The whole week has not all been about Year 11 though, on Wednesday evening teachers caught up with our Year 10 parents and carers for the PCM meetings and we have held an enrichment week for Year 12 pupils with talks and activities about their post-18 options. We have also had the very exciting news that Karlotte C (9EFR) has had her artwork ‘Beef and Mash’ selected from 23,000 entries to be displayed in the Royal Academy Young Artists Exhibition this summer. This is complemented by the news that pupils, Poppy B (9EMU) and Judith K (9FDO) have made it to the finals of The Poetry by Heart national competition with their performance of Pink Matter. This will see them perform on the stage of Shakespeare’s Globe on Monday 7th July. These are very impressive achievements and we are incredibly proud of their talent and hard work.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week which we will be recognising in school with special assemblies and activities during registration. Mental health is everything: Mental health is more than just a small part of our lives. It’s connected to every little thing we do, every place we go and every person around us. Mental health is our physical health, our finances, our relationships. It’s part of our defining moments and the day to day. Despite this, a recent Mind survey found public attitudes and understanding of mental health have started to go backwards. With this in mind, it is more important than ever that our children and young people feel supported in school and at home. There are many online resources to help you if you feel your child may be struggling but as a starting point I would recommend taking a look at the information for parents on the website for mental health charity, Mind.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
We have had another successful week and I know that our Year 9 students loved seeing the incredible dress up day costumes from our Year 11s. I have had some brilliant and highly creative conversations about potential
costume ideas from our students as well - which I am most excited about! We have also had the fantastic news that Karlotte C, 9EFR, has had her artwork selected to appear in the Young Artist’s Summer Show at the Royal Academy this year AND that Poppy B (9EMU) and Judith K (9FDO) have made it to the finals of The Poetry by Heart national competition with their performance of Pink Matter. These wonderful achievements are testament not only to their talent but the hard work they have put in and we are all very proud!
The focus this week has been on ensuring that Year 9 are coming to school with the correct equipment and their lanyards. I am so pleased that the majority of our students are consistently coming into school with the correct equipment and uniform. Please can I ask that you make some time each evening to check that your child(ren) have their Chromebook charged and they have their lanyard. Year 9 continue to shine with their Epraise totals. The current leaderboard reads as follows: 1st 9EMU , 2nd 9PWA and 3rd place goes to 9SSR/9FCO who are neck and neck for third place. Top Epraise in each form: Next week we will be focusing on kindness in our tutor time programme. Students will be encouraged to write a ‘Kindness Card’ to two members of school staff and share some positive feedback. It would be wonderful if you could speak to your child(ren) about the adults in the school who help them- these could be teachers, form tutors, support staff, the pastoral team, hub staff or members of our canteen or caretaking team. BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘Things a Bright Girl Can Do’ by Sally Nicholls
Set in the early twentieth century, this novel follows three brave young women as they all become involved in the Suffragette movement. I loved how Nicholls brought the time period to life, showing what it felt like to be a woman and girl during that turbulent time. But if historical novels aren’t usually your thing, don’t be put off. It feels really modern and fresh, exploring issues like class differences as the three main characters come from different backgrounds. There is also a beautiful love story between two of the characters. It has something for everyone!

MULTILINGUALISM AT WALDEGRAVE Each and every student in our school contributes their amazing strengths to what makes Waldegrave School such a rich and precious environment - a great attitude to learning, solid content knowledge, artistic talents or sports abilities. Speaking another language is another great example of our collective superpowers. This half-term pupils will be using their Friday afternoon registration time learning a bit more about the most spoken languages in our school. Last Friday pupils explored Mandarin Chinese and this week the focus was Turkish. We hope their enjoy the activities, learn something new and that you can talk about this at home.
BEHAVIOUR FOCUS For this half of the Summer Term the school’s leadership team has chosen to focus on our First Rule at Waldegrave: Respect and value learning, each other and our environment. As part of this focus we are asking students to be ready for their lessons each day by coming into school with a fully charged chromebook every morning. This area has been selected as the largest number of behaviour points are given to students for not having their chromebooks ready for lessons. Please support your child(ren) to get into the simple routine of charging their laptop each evening. PARENT GOVERNOR RECRUITMENT Our Governing Board is currently recruiting for a parent governor who wants to work at a strategic level to develop the school. We would be particularly interested in appointing someone who works or has experience in Higher Education or Careers Education. Continuous training and development are key to the role and will be provided to help you acquire/develop the skills to be an effective governor and you can read more about the work our governors do on our website. We have sent a letter home with further information and details on how to apply.
