We were awed by the spectacle of costumes on display during the Year 11 Dress Up Day on Tuesday, joyfully remembered the past five years with our wonderful Year 11 pupils in Wednesday’s Final HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE

~ Ms Tongue, Headteacher Next week we look forward to welcoming a Swedish Choir to the school who are visiting from Gothenburg. Our Year 9 pupils will also be taking part in two training days in school as part of their preparations for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. May I remind parents that we are still welcoming applications for the role of parent governor. Celebration Assembly and faced the start of GCSE exams on Thursday. The whole week has not all been about Year 11 though, on Wednesday evening teachers caught up with our Year 10 parents and carers for the PCM meetings and we have held an enrichment week for Year 12 pupils with talks and activities about their post-18 options. We have also had the very exciting news that Karlotte C (9EFR) has had her artwork ‘Beef and Mash’ selected from 23,000 entries to be displayed in the Royal Academy Young Artists Exhibition this summer. This is complemented by the news that pupils, Poppy B (9EMU) and Judith K (9FDO) have made it to the finals of The Poetry by Heart national competition with their performance of Pink Matter. This will see them perform on the stage of Shakespeare’s Globe on Monday 7th July. These are very impressive achievements and we are incredibly proud of their talent and hard work.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness Week which we will be recognising in school with special assemblies and activities during registration. Mental health is everything: Mental health is more than just a small part of our lives. It’s connected to every little thing we do, every place we go and every person around us. Mental health is our physical health, our finances, our relationships. It’s part of our defining moments and the day to day. Despite this, a recent Mind survey found public attitudes and understanding of mental health have started to go backwards. With this in mind, it is more important than ever that our children and young people feel supported in school and at home. There are many online resources to help you if you feel your child may be struggling but as a starting point I would recommend taking a look at the information for parents on the website for mental health charity, Mind.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 7
On Thursday last week Year 7 experienced a lovely assembly led by Ms O’Brien in which the school orchestra played some extracts from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. As our Year 11 students are leaving school soon, Ms O’Brien explained that there are vacancies for our Year 7s to learn to play a variety of instruments and maybe form part of this orchestra in future. We hope some will take up this offer. In Science, 7FLY have been constructing a capsule to transport a water balloon from varying heights and landing without it bursting! The winners were “Mission isn’t Impossible” who managed a distance of 1m 75cm. Well done to all. Clubs are up and running and Year 7 have been attending lots of these, we look forward to hearing about results from upcoming fixtures.
Well done to Alex A, 7SDE & Isabelle B, 7ESU who were the top epraise earners last week. The top epraise tutor group were 3rd 7PFO, 2nd 7EEL, 1st 7SON.
This week all students engaged in a VE day presentation as we marked the 80th anniversary for this event. They watched some very engaging presentations and discussed why it is important to commemorate occasions like this.
Next week is mental health awareness week. Year 7 will be looking at how they can support themselves and each other in their school community and think about strategies that will help do this.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Princess and the Suffragette’ by Holly Webb This is a truly inspirational book about the struggles for women and children in the early 1900s. Set in 1913, the book revolves around the suffragette movement, a campaign group active from 1903 to 1914 which used direct action to advance their aim of achieving women’s suffrage (the right to vote) in the United Kingdom. The book describes the difference in lifestyle for the poor and the rich, covering relatable topics such as divorce and adoptions. I loved how relatable all the characters were and it has slowly become one of my favourite novels of all time! I suggest this book to any historical drama fans, comedy and even non-fiction lovers. Read this if you enjoyed the ‘Rebel Girl’ series or ‘Secretly a suffragette’. I absolutely recommend this book to all ages!

MULTILINGUALISM AT WALDEGRAVE Each and every student in our school contributes their amazing strengths to what makes Waldegrave School such a rich and precious environment - a great attitude to learning, solid content knowledge, artistic talents or sports abilities. Speaking another language is another great example of our collective superpowers. This half-term pupils will be using their Friday afternoon registration time learning a bit more about the most spoken languages in our school. Last Friday pupils explored Mandarin Chinese and this week the focus was Turkish. We hope their enjoy the activities, learn something new and that you can talk about this at home.
BEHAVIOUR FOCUS For this half of the Summer Term the school’s leadership team has chosen to focus on our First Rule at Waldegrave: Respect and value learning, each other and our environment. As part of this focus we are asking students to be ready for their lessons each day by coming into school with a fully charged chromebook every morning. This area has been selected as the largest number of behaviour points are given to students for not having their chromebooks ready for lessons. Please support your child(ren) to get into the simple routine of charging their laptop each evening. PARENT GOVERNOR RECRUITMENT Our Governing Board is currently recruiting for a parent governor who wants to work at a strategic level to develop the school. We would be particularly interested in appointing someone who works or has experience in Higher Education or Careers Education. Continuous training and development are key to the role and will be provided to help you acquire/develop the skills to be an effective governor and you can read more about the work our governors do on our website. We have sent a letter home with further information and details on how to apply.
