NOVEMBER 16, 1919 WITNESSES OF CHRIST’S GLORY. Golden Text: “This is my beloved Son: hear him.“ Mark 9:7. BESSON TEXT Luke 9:28-36.

(28) And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. (29) And as he prayed, the fashion of his coun tenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. (30) And behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: (31) Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accom plish at Jerusalem. (32) But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. (33) Theme: “A Glimpse of Glory.” Outline: (1) The Theater. (2) The Transfiguration. (3) The Theme. (4) The Teaching. (1) The Theater. Bight days after the Lord’s communication of His com ing suffering and death, and Peter’s confession, He took His disciples prob ably to one of the vil- EXPOSITION lages in the foothills of LESSON Mt. Hermon and, sep- T. C. Horton arating Peter, James and John, ascended the mountain which Peter calls “the Holy Mount.” (2 Pet. 1:18). The choice of these three— favored with the revelation of His power in the resurrection of the daughter of Jairus, of this revelation, and of His suffering in the Garden—was not one of favorit ism, but one of commendation for faith fulness to Himself. Mark says “with Him”—as companions, for fellowship (1 Cor. 12:11). Many are called hut few are the chosen ones. There has been a singular silence con cerning the eight days preceding—days

And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Mas ter, It is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias not knowing what he said. (34) While he thus spake there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. (35) And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son hear him. (361) And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. for meditation and prayer concerning His coming death, and days of prepara tion for the revelation awaiting them. The mountain top is suggestive. On a mountain Isaac was offered by his father, Abraham. From a mountain came the Law. On a mountain Elijah obtained a great victory over the foes of the Lord. The Mount of Olives was a favorite resort of Jesus for prayer, and from the same Mount He ascended, and to this Mount He will return (Zech. 14:4). They went up to pray, and this must not be forgotten in our contemplation of this wonderful scene before us. Every important event connected with His life seems associated with prayer, either at the opening or closing. His ministry opened with prayer (Luke 3:21) and He closed His life, on the cross, with prayer (Luke 23:46). (2) The Transfiguration. While He prayed—mark it—He was transfigured. His outward form changed (John 17:5). Luke says “His garments became, glis tering (Luke 9: 29 ) ; Mark says “His raiment became shining white as snow” (Mark 9 : 3 ) ; Matthew says “His face
