CHAPTER EIGHT • SPACE UTILIZATION ANALYSIS NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

SCHOOL GYMNASIUMS NPD has experienced significant growth in its youth basketball program over the past few years. The intergovernmental cooperative agreements with School Districts 203 and 204 for the use of their gymnasiums have been instrumental in accommodating the increased demand and overflow from the Fort Hill Activity Center. During the winter 2024 season, a total of 1,720 hours of gym time was used across various facilities. This robust schedule underscores the high demand for indoor gymnasium space within the community. The breakdown of facility usage for basketball programming in 2024 is as follows:

ɀ Cooperative School Gyms (6 schools): 640 hours (64 hours per week over 10 weeks) ɀ Non-Cooperative School Gyms (22 schools): 1,020 hours (102 hours per week over 10 weeks) ɀ Fort Hill Activity Center: 410 hours (41 hours per week over 10 weeks)

While school gyms are pivotal in supporting youth athletics, their use is often challenged by time limitations and school scheduling priorities. NPD saw a total of 273 registrations left on the waitlist in winter 2024. Despite logistical challenges, NPD maintains a mutually beneficial partnership with the school districts through consistent communication and strategic planning. NPD and school district representatives meet annually to establish the facility use schedule for the upcoming year. NPD’s proactive approach to securing and utilizing gym space through cooperative agreements with local schools has been crucial in meeting the community’s recreational needs. Further enhancing facility availability will be key to sustaining and growing NPD’s successful youth basketball programs.
