CHAPTER EIGHT • SPACE UTILIZATION ANALYSIS NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

AQUATICS A 2012 community survey and 2014 aquatics study highlighted several key concerns with adding an aquatic facility to the Park District’s facility inventory. Centennial Beach, a beloved outdoor facility managed by NPD, attracts crowds during the summer months. However, its seasonal availability restricts year-round use. Neighborhood outdoor pools offer an alternative, yet their high membership costs and limited availability deter many, and like Centennial Beach, their seasonal availability also restricts year- round use. To supplement these options, the Park District uses Naperville North High School (NNHS) indoor aquatic facilities for swim programs, but shared usage restricts availability for programs and open swim sessions. Colder competition pool temperatures for younger and older program participants also impact aquatics programming. Future considerations identified in the past have included combining aquatic facilities with fitness centers to optimize usage and meet diverse community needs more effectively, particularly for seniors and special needs populations who benefit from warmer, therapeutic pools. The graphs to the left provide insight into 2023 aquatics program participation at the NNHS pool. Programs include swim lessons and conditioning for various levels as well as water polo. Swim Lessons tend to have full enrollments, especially at the lower levels, indicating high demand for beginner swim classes. Water Polo and Swim Conditioning programs generally have enrollments under maximum capacity, with a few instances of classes meeting the maximum enrollment. Swim Lessons are available at various levels, from beginner (Level 1) to advanced (Level 7), and are scheduled throughout the morning, with most classes starting between 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on Sundays. The other programs have limited times on weekdays, mostly in the evenings, two to three days a week. XILIN ASSOCIATION The Xilin Association is a non-profit organization that helps to meet the social services needs of underserved families in the Chicago area. The Naperville location provides adult daycare, community health services, a Chinese school, and afterschool programming. Additional programming space is subleased by NPD from the Xilin Association and consists of 1,208 SF of studio space that hosts a variety of dance and cultural activities. Located in north Naperville, the partnership and facility help to address the community needs for more diverse and culturally relevant programming. Programs are typically offered on weekdays, especially Tuesdays and Thursdays, in the evening between 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Programs are also offered on Saturdays, mostly between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
