APPENDIX VII: OPEN SURVEY & BRIEF ON-SITE QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

PROGRAM IDEAS BY AGE GROUP Respondents suggested the need for a variety of additional programs. The major themes are described below. Early Childhood Programs Suggestions include programs or events for children under age four. Several respondents suggested daycare, and fine/visual arts, including dance, music, theatre, and crafts. Other suggestions include swimming lessons, mommy and me programs, additional preschool options, camps for preschoolers, and introduction to sports such as gymnastics and “tot sports.” Youth Programs Regarding suggested programs for the age category between 5 to 17 years of age, many respondents suggested an indoor pool be added for open swim, swim lessons, lap swimming, swim team, and water polo. There is also interest in more open gym time and more recreational sports for middle and high school age youth, especially basketball and volleyball. Respondents also suggested more sports camps, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, flag football, gymnastics, and karate. Quite a few respondents noted the difficulty (due to limited capacity) in signing up for youth activities and they requested more space and sessions for youth activities. A number of respondents suggested arts and crafts, performing arts (e.g., theater, dance), special interest programs (e.g., hobbies, science, STEM), more camps, outdoor activities, and more space and activities for youth with special needs. Adult Programs Many respondents requested an indoor pool, a masters swim program, lap swimming, open swim, water aerobics, and a warm water therapy pool. More fitness classes, pickleball classes, open gym time for playing basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s sports were mentioned. Other activity themes mentioned by some respondents included arts and crafts, performing arts (e.g., dance, music, theater), outdoor activities, wellness programs (e.g., meditation, cooking), and special interest programs. Adult Programs (60+ years) Many respondents requested an indoor pool that offers lap swimming, learn to swim, water aerobics and masters swimming. Pickleball and tennis were the most frequently requested sports with requests for more pickleball classes and more time/ court space (indoor and outdoor). Requests were also made for more adapted fitness classes. Adults over 60 were also interested in arts and crafts, social and hobby activities (e.g., book clubs, social gatherings), trips, and nature-based activities.
