CHAPTER FOUR • KEY LEADER INTERVIEWS NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
2. Do you and your family currently use indoor recreation spaces offered by other providers? If so, which spaces and for what purposes? Some families opt to use other providers’ indoor recreation spaces, such as Pelican Harbor, for swimming and family activities due to the amenities not being available through the Park District. Despite their appeal, cost and varying family interests sometimes limit usage of other indoor recreation spaces. The Fry Family YMCA and other similar facilities are utilized as well, though there is a growing trend towards at-home fitness solutions like Peloton due to convenience. Many residents have transitioned from maintaining memberships at gyms like XSport and Lifetime to home- based options. Proximity and ease of access are significant factors influencing the choice of facility, making the well-managed and clean Fort Hill Activity Center particularly appealing. Naperville benefits from agreements with local schools that offer indoor amenities although these are often in high demand, which can limit availability. This combination of local and regional facilities caters to a wide range of recreational needs, reflecting the community’s diverse interests in indoor recreation spaces. 3. What are some things you feel the Naperville Park District does very well? The Naperville Park District excels in maintaining high safety standards, effective communication, listening to the community, and offering a broad array of programs, including sports and non-sports activities. The District manages waitlists efficiently, provides excellent customer service, and keeps facilities clean and safe consistently, which is highly valued by families. The District’s parks are well-kept with excellent bike paths, and the agency fosters strong partnerships with schools and other organizations, thereby enhancing the variety and quality of available programs. Affordability is another commendable aspect, making recreational programs and activities accessible to more residents. The District’s support for special needs programs, innovative programming, and well-maintained trails are highly appreciated. Collaboration with WDSRA further enriches the community’s recreational opportunities, aligning well with the values and needs of residents. 4. What indoor recreation facilities do you feel (or hear about from others) need to be added or expanded within the community? Most often, the need for additional indoor aquatics space and lap lanes in the community is mentioned, particularly in reference to the closure of other local fitness facilities. Residents also suggest adding indoor soccer practice spaces, multi-purpose rooms, and indoor turf fields for various sports and activities. Family-oriented indoor spaces and aquatics catering to all age groups are highly desired. There is also a notable interest in facilities for sports such as cricket, badminton, and pickleball, with suggestions for a large outdoor sports complex to support these activities and other athletic tournaments.
