CHAPTER FIVE • FOCUS GROUPS NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
ɀ Some participants suggested design enhancements for future locker rooms in a new facility. Suggestions include:
ȿ Providing access to hairdryers. ȿ Increased privacy in showers. ȿ Improving poor lighting (there is a perception the lighting in the private changing rooms/showers is poor – a few participants mentioned these areas are dark and they are uncomfortable using them).
ɀ Quite a few participants expressed that Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center is being used inefficiently and could be used to provide additional programming. ɀ Residents expressed interest in a performance/recital space after the loss of The Barn. ȿ Piano, theater, and dance were all mentioned. ɀ Residents expressed a desire for the new facility to have adequate parking at peak times. PROGRAMMING ɀ There is an interest in increased youth programming. ȿ Rosters could be expanded as busy kids cannot always make games and this leaves some rosters short on game days. ȿ Non-sports programming needs to be taken more seriously – the Park District should more intentionally consider the needs of youth who are interested in activities beyond sports/fitness activities (this was a perception of a smaller number of participants). ɀ There needs to be increased intentionality and thoughtfulness to program scheduling. ȿ There is overlap between similar age groups in different sports, leading to missed games due to time conflicts. ɀ Increased young adult programming. ȿ Much of the current programming is geared towards active older adults and youth. There are more limited options for the 20-50-year-old crowd. ▪ Suggestions included more health and wellness programs (of various lengths – workshops/ seminars and programs across multiple dimensions of wellness). ȿ There are only “mommy and me” programs, no “daddy/ parent” and me options (the suggestion here is to be more inclusive with the way these programs are framed). ɀ Many participants are unaware of the art studio (i.e., Studio One) and/or the programming scheduled at the 95th Street Center.
