CHAPTER SEVEN • COMMUNITY SURVEY NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
INSIGHTS: CONSTRAINTS TO PARTICIPATION The first open-ended question for the residents was regarding the constraints to participation in Naperville Park District indoor recreation facilities. Content analysis produced five themes: Lack of Specific Facilities/Programs, Family Aging Out of Programs, Lack of Nearby Facilities, Lack of Indoor Aquatics, and Lack of Information. LACK OF SPECIFIC FACILITIES/ PROGRAMS
LACK OF INDOOR AQUATICS Many respondents mentioned the lack of an indoor pool is a constraint to engagement with NPD. Thus, adding an indoor pool is key to their participation. LACK OF INFORMATION A few residents said they were not aware of the programs available within NPD and did not receive any information about programs.
Several respondents commented about the lack of indoor tennis courts and inconvenient schedules for some classes such as yoga. Therefore, they engage in these activities elsewhere. Some respondents prefer programs unavailable at NPD such as rock wall climbing. FAMILY AGING OUT OF PROGRAMS Several respondents mentioned an interest in programs for young adults. Some respondents have children who have aged out of programs and thus participation in programs has declined. LACK OF NEARBY FACILITIES Fort Hill is on the north side of Naperville, which is perceived by many respondents as far for south side residents. The inconvenient location and longer drive times are a constraint to their participation. Several residents want to have a new facility on the south side for a more convenient drive.
