CHAPTER SEVEN • COMMUNITY SURVEY NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT
INSIGHTS: PARK DISTRICT PERFORMANCE & VALUE Respondents offered open-ended comments to elaborate on negative (strongly disagree and disagree) and undecided ratings. After analyzing nearly 100 responses, 10 themes were identified as described below. UNFAMILIAR WITH FACILITIES/ PROGRAMS/SERVICES Many respondents explained they are not aware, Another respondent mentioned the Naperville Park District website was difficult to navigate. Several respondents mentioned they haven’t seen print marketing materials and were unsure of what is offered. LACK OF FACILITIES IN OTHER AREAS OF NAPERVILLE
uninformed or have not visited NPD recreation facilities, thus they could not judge or give an opinion of facilities and services offered by NPD. LACK OF INDOOR AQUATICS Many respondents noted there is a need for an indoor pool within NPD. Respondents noted the popularity of swimming (for fitness/health and competitive swimming). Respondents like Centennial Beach, but it is only open seasonally and people do not have a place to swim the other nine months of the year. LACK OF SPORTS FACILITIES/ INFRASTRUCTURE Respondents highlighted lack of specific sports facilities as another reason for negative ratings. Not enough space for winter sports, no hockey rink, no racquet facility, lack of an indoor pickleball facility, tennis courts and the need for more basketball facilities were among the answers. YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM CAPACITY/ REGISTRATION ISSUES Due to Naperville’s large population, capacity of programs like indoor kids’ sports, basketball, soccer, Zumba classes, camps for kids, and recreational toddler age gymnastics and sports classes are limited. The respondents highlighted the importance of a larger indoor recreation facility that can hold programs with more participants. MARKETING/AWARENESS Those who responded commented that they are uninformed about NPD program offerings and suggested increased marketing. A few respondents mentioned that the program catalog is useful, while others shared that the program catalog and website are large and difficult to navigate.
Residents stated that Fort Hill is too far for people in other areas of Naperville. A few said the ARRCC was convenient, but due to lack of space, yoga classes were moved to Fort Hill, which is far for them. Respondents said it would be convenient to have another recreation facility with an indoor pool on the other side of Naperville. LACKING PROGRAMMING Of those who responded, several respondents commented they would prefer more recreational programs like senior programs, pickleball, volleyball, softball, badminton, football, new things like skateboarding, fitness programs, line dance, and an increase in hours in pottery studio. NEED AN INDOOR FACILITY IN SOUTH NAPERVILLE Respondents expressed the importance of building another facility similar to Fort Hill in south Naperville and that it would be beneficial for the community. Fort Hill is far for south Naperville residents and less conveniently located for residents who live on the south side of Naperville. STAFF Only two respondents commented on staff. Very few mentioned that staff was not helpful. FEES Residents mentioned some programs provided by the Park District are expensive: open gym, lacrosse, and kids programs. Due to unaffordability, people exhibited less program satisfaction.
