CHAPTER SEVEN • COMMUNITY SURVEY NAPERVILLE PARK DISTRICT INDOOR RECREATION SPACE NEEDS ASSESSMENT

FACILITY NEEDS BY SAMPLE In comparing both samples on unmet facility needs, both samples had very similar results for “gym courts,” “walking/jogging track,” “health and fitness space,” “gymnastics space,” “synthetic turf fields,” “theater/performance spaces,” and “multi-purpose and general program space.” The most striking differences in the sample were the need for aquatic facilities (Figure 17) . Though the majority of respondents from the random and public samples rated aquatic facilities as unmet needs, the public sample showed much stronger need for aquatic facilities. In fact, almost 80% of the public sample indicated a strong need for a lap pool, warm water therapy pool, pool for swim lessons/open swim, and water park, compared to just 63% or less of the random sample across all these facilities.

ENOUGH INDOOR RECREATION FACILITIES? The majority of both samples disagreed/strongly disagreed that there are enough indoor recreation facilities within NPD (Figure 18) . In the public sample, 64% disagreed there are enough indoor recreation facilities and in the random sample, 42% disagreed there are enough indoor recreation facilities within NPD. Though there is a sizable difference between these figures, both results strongly suggest that there is a need for more indoor recreation space, and align with the strong support and general willingness to pay for a multi-purpose activity center with an indoor pool.
