L’ORIGNAL | The growing development of special festivals in Prescott-Russell is becoming both popular and profitable for the region. Sylvain Charlebois, director for econom- ic development and tourism for the Unit- ed Counties of Prescott-Russell (UCPR), presented the counties council recently with a summary report of the past three seasons of special events in Prescott-Rus- sell for 2013. “They are very strong, our festivals,” Charlebois said. The 16 events listed in the report, ranging from Canada Day spectacles in several communities to regular annual special events like the Western Festivals in Alfred and Wendover and the St-Albert Curd Festival, all resulted in a combined total of more than 150,000 visitors to the Prescott-Russell region. Us- ing a standardized model for calculating the economic spinoff from festival atten- dance, the report stated that the direct economic benefit from all these 16 events tallied up to almost $11 million from sales of food and beverages, gasoline, and other products and services. Charlebois noted that the report just deals with the economic impact of events for which his office was able to get details on atten- dance. Organizers for some special events not listed in the report either did not have attendance numbers to report or failed to keep accurate track, or else did not re- spond when Charlebois’ office contacted them. Charlebois hopes that next year will see more detailed information made available on special event attendance in the region to provide an even more accu- rate profile on the importance of festivals and similar events.
Wear it to win program

Josiane Paquette, 3, of Alexandria, is congratulated by Alexandria Home Hardware owner Ron Aubin and Stor- mont-Dundas-Glengarry Ontario Pro- vincial Police Staff Sergeant Mike Mul- hearn after she won a newbicycle in the “Wear it toWin”bicycle safety program. Because she was stopped by the SD&G O.P.P. wearing her helmet, Josiane was given a safety ticket, which she re- deemed at the Alexandria Dairy Queen for an ice cream treat. Her ballot was chosen making her the lucky winner. Alex Lecompte, 17 of North Glengarry, was the winner of a new skateboard, courtesy of Raage Skateshop. He will be presented with his award at a future date.
