December 1929

December 5— “The servant o f the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient" (2 Tim. 2:24).. The whole New Testament thus teaches and impresses the duty of living with others in a quiet and peaceable way. Whatever is unloving in act, word, or spirit must be avoided. All malice and bitterness and all clamor and evil speak ing are to be put off; and all meekness, patience, kindness, and thoughtfulness are to be put on. The story is told of two monks who had never quarreled. They had lived together for many years in a cave, learning to love each other with ever-deepening love. Wearying at last of the monotony of their life, one of them suggested to the other that they should have a quarrel, after the fashion of the people of the outside world. “But about what shall we quarrel?” asked the other. “We will take this stone and put it be tween us, and I will say, ‘This stone is mine,’ and you will say, ‘This stone is mine’; and so we will quarrel.” The stone was placed between them. “This stone is mine,” said one. “I think the stone is mine,” the other gently replied. “If the stone is thine, take it,” said the one who had proposed the quarrel. They found it impossible to quarrel. It should be so with the friends of Christ. — Selected. December 6—“The L o r d hath sent strength for thee” (Psa. 68:28, P. B. V,). The Lord imparts unto us that primary strength of character which makes every thing in life work with intensity and de cision. We are “strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man.” And the strength is continuous; reserves of power come to us which we cannot exhaust. “As thy days so shall thy strength be”— strength of will, strength of affection, strength of judgment, strength of ideals and achievement. “The Lord is my strength” to go on. He gives us power to tread the dead level, to walk the long lane that seems never to have a turning, to go through those long reaches of life which afford no pleasant surprise, and which depress the spirits in the sameness of a terrible drudgery. “The Lord is my strength” to go up. He is to me the power by which I can climb the Hill Difficulty and not be afraid. “The Lord is my strength” to go down. It is when we leave the bracing heights, where the wind and the sun have been about us, and when we begin to come down the hill into closer and more sultry spheres, that the heart is apt to grow faint. I heard a man say the other day concerning his growing physical frailty, “It is the coming down that tires me!” “The Lord is my strength” to sit still. And how difficult is the attainment! Do we not often say to one another, in sea

sons when we are compelled to be quiet, “If only I could do something!” When 4he- child is ill, and the mother stands by in comparative impotence, how severe is the test! But to do nothing, just to, sit still and wait, requires tremendous strength. “The Lord is my strength” ! “Our sufficiency is of God.”— The Silver Lining. —o— December 7— “Amid hopeless circum stances, he hopefully believed ” (Rom. 4: 18, Weymouth’s Translation). We are told that Abraham could look at his own body and consider it as good as dead without being discouraged, be cause he was not looking at himself, but at the Almighty One. He did not stagger at the promise, but stood straight up un bending beneath his mighty load of bless ing; and instead of growing weak he waxed strong in the faith, grew more ro bust, the more difficulties became appar ent, glorifying God through His very suf ficiency and being “fully persuaded” (as the Greek expresses it) “that he who had promised was,” not able, but as it literally means, “abundantly able,” munificently able, able with an infinite surplus of re sources, infinitely able “to perform.” He is the God of boundless resources. The only limit is in us. Our asking, our thinking, our praying are too small; our expectations are too limited. He is trying to lift us up to a higher conception, and lure us on to a mightier expectation and appropriation. Oh, shall we put Him in derision? There is no limit to what we may ask and expect of our glorious El- Shaddai; and there is but one measure here given for His blessing; and that is “according to the power that worketh in us.”— A. B. Simpson. —:0— . December 8— “Wait patiently" (Psalm 37:7). I saw the proprietor of a garden stand ing at his fence, calling to his poor neigh bor : “Would you like some grapes ?” “Yes, and very thankful,” was the ready answer. “Then bring your basket.” The basket was quickly handed over the fence. The f owner took it and disappeared among the vines; and I marked that he deposited into it rich clusters from the fruitful labyrinth in which he hid him self. The woman stood at the fence quiet and hopeful. At length the gardener re appeared with a well-filled basket, saying, “I have made you wait a good while, but there are all the more grapes.” “It is so,” thought I, “with the Proprietor of all things. He says: ‘What shall I give thee ?’ ‘Ask and thou shalt receive.” ’ So I bring my empty vessel—my needy soul. He dis appears, but I am not always as patient and trustful as the poor woman. Some times I cry out, “How long! How long!” At last He comes to me richly laden, and kindly chides my impatience, saying: “Have I made thee wait long? See what
