Our great Helper in prayer is the Lord Jesus Christ, our Advocate with the Fa- ther, our Great High Priest, whose chief ministry for us these centuries has been intercession- and prayer. He it is who takes our imperfect petitions from our hands, cleanses them from their defects, corrects their faults, and then claims their answer from His Father on His own ac count and through His all-atoning merits and righteousness. Brother, are you faint ing in prayer? Look up. Your blessed Advocate has already claimed your an swer, and you would grieve and disap point Him if you were to give up the conflict in the very moment when victory is on its way to meet you. He has gone in for you into the inner chamber, and already holds up your name upon the palms of His hands; and the messenger, which is to bring you your blessing, is now on his way, and the Spirit is only waiting your trust to whisper in your heart the echo of the answer from the throne, “It is done.”— A. B. Simpson. —o— December 20— “Dread not, neither be discouraged . . . Yet in this thing ye did not believe the Lord your God” (Deut. 1 :21, 32). The devil has two master tricks. One is to get us discouraged; then for a time at least we can be of no service to others, and so are defeated. The other is to make us doubt, thus breaking the faith link by which we are bound to our Father. Look ou t! Do not be tricked either way.— G. E. M. December 21— “Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, save a pot of oil” (2 Kings 4:2). This was the reply of the poor widow when questioned as to her resources. Lit tle did she dream that her little pot of oil could be attached to divine power and turned into a fountain of wealth. Little did Dorcas imagine that her sewing needle would be the instrument of show.- ing- forth her saintly charity to all gen erations. How the dealings of God for ever soar above all the conjectures of men, and His marvelous providence walks through the heavens, and uses the seem ingly trifling things of life as stepping stones. Here we have an insight into God’s government, how He is constantly joining the supernatural upon the natural, taking the little things, and weak things of the creature, and welding them to Omnipotence and grace. Nothing is more wonderful than how God unites Himself to created beings. He did not ignore the little pot of oil, but made it the nucleus of His exhaustless supply. It is not the measure of what we have that tells the most, but the measure in which our little ness is given up to the Lord, and led out into His purposes, and into the power of the Holy Spirit.— G. D. Watson. —o— December 22— “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do: for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking” (Matt. 6:7). Prayer without faith degenerates into objectless routine, or soulless hypocrisy. Prayer with faith brings Omnipotence to back our petitions. Better not pray unless

and until your whole being responds to the efficacy of your supplication. When the true prayer is breathed, earth and heaven, the past and the future, say Amen. And Christ prayed such prayers. — P. C. M. —o— December 23— “Search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word” (Matt. 2:8). What a wonderful day in one’s life when they can say, “I have found Him whom my soul loveth.” Lord Kelvin, one of the world’s most distinguished scien tists, was approached by a pompous young would-be scientist who asked him which one of his discoveries he considered to be the most valuable. The unexpected re ply was, “I think that to me the most valuable of all the discoveries I have ever made was when I discovered my Saviour in Jesus Christ.”— Selected. December 24— “Herod will seek the young child to destroy him” (Matt. 2: 13). There are Herods today, who will seek to destroy the young Child. For if we are born from above, we have a new life. The Child Jesus is in u s; and Satan, through his agencies, wants to destroy Him in us. Many a time since the first flight into Egypt has the Christ had to go into the stillness of the desert to be saved. Do we see as we might God’s won-

derful care over the life of the young Child in us ? Paul said, “When it pleased God to reveal his Son in me, immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood . . . but I went into Arabia” (Gal. 1:15-17). It does riot matter where we are, where we go, how obscure places may be, if orily the life of the young Child is safe— the Christ-life in us above everything else—above place, home, friends. The life must not be jeopardized; we must guard that life.— Margaret Bottome.

December 25—“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son . . . ” (Gal. 4:4).

No angel could have accomplished what needed to be done. It required God; and in the fulness of time, God came. He, the O X FO R D B IBLES F or C H R IS TM A S GIFTS A F E W SUGGESTIONS
