How a Sea Captain Found the Way ( Continued from page 588) the end of his homeward run. In the course of our con versation he said: ‘Though I am retiring with honors at the end of this voyage, after forty years of service, I have failed in my Christian life. Neither money, fame nor lust have defeated m e; but I have such an uncontroll able temper!’ Thank God, we could say, ‘Brother, there is victory for you from this day on.’ He brought out his Bible, and we examined him thoroughly on the plan of salvation; then showed him, not WHAT nor WHERE he had been defeated, but WHO was the enemy—Satan. After this, praise God, he was led to see that there was ONE who had completely defeated Satan and gained a permanent victory; who, in the person of the Holy Spirit, dwells in every believer. That to recognize His presence and make a definite surrender of self, is to realize vic tory, for ‘greater is he that is in you, titan he that is in the world’ (1 John 4 :4). We feel sure the Holy Spirit did a real work with this veteran of the sea.” This was only one sailor out of the hundreds we reach. Pray for these men—that the lost may be saved, and the saved may learn that they “can do all things through Christ, which strengthened” them.

Many people had made sacrifices that these things might be, reflected Uncle Alan, as they trooped to the piano. Mary the mother had made sacrifices; yes, and Joseph, too! And God the Father had, sacrificed, had given, till He had no more to give—had emptied heaven, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. He prayed that what would look like a sacrifice to Althea Sumner, in her prosperous and beauti ful youth, might be made blessed for her and precious to her. And then looking back at certain crucial hours in his own life of sacrifice, he rejoiced that he could glorify God for it all. “ ‘Not one pain too many,’ Lord!” he quoted to him self quietly before the fire. “Uncle A lan! I wish I could have been one of the Wise Men!” It was Little Sister, close by. “I wish I ’d seen the star and followed it. Was that why they were wise men, because they knew enough to follow the star?” “Perhaps!” “And I wish most of all that I could have seen the little Baby Jesus. Why can’t I ?” “Because we have the dear Saviour with us always, Little Sister, and that is better yet. Don’t you hear what the Christmas carol says? “O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in; Be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels Their great glad tidings tell, Oh, come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Emmanuel 1” P a tien ce a t Work Patience is the ballast of the soul. Without it, any passing storm will set the ship tossing and straining. With it, the vessel can keep steady, and go forward, or at the worst, lie safely in the biggest tempest that can blow over the seas of life.— Sel.
