Heart attack • In the United States, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds . 3 • Every year, about 805,000 people in the United States have a heart attack. 3 • Of these, 605,000 are a first heart attack. 3 • 200,000 occur to those who have already experienced at least one heart attack. 3 • About 1 in 5 heart attacks are silent — the damage is done, but the person is not aware of it. 3 • The direct medical costs of a heart attack include emergency room visits, hospitalization, surgical procedures such as angioplasty or bypass surgery, medications and follow-up care. 4 • According to the American Heart Association, the average cost of a heart attack in the United States is estimated to be over $20,000 . The actual costs can vary widely depending on factors such as the severity of the heart attack, the type of treatment required and the location of the medical facility. 4 Stroke • Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. • About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes. • About 185,000 strokes — nearly 1 in 4 — are in people who have already had a stroke. 5 • On average, the direct medical costs of a stroke in the United States can range from $30,000 to $120,000 per patient , depending on the severity and complications. This includes hospitalization, diagnostic tests, medications and rehabilitation services. The initial hospital stay alone can cost tens of thousands of dollars, as stroke patients often require specialized care in intensive care units. 6 Expenses can quickly add up, placing a significant financial burden on individuals and their families.

Coronary artery bypass grafting • Cardiac bypass is the most common type of heart surgery performed on adults in the United States. More than 300,000 have successful bypass surgery in the U.S. each year. 7 • What’s not common is finding two patients who have paid the same amount for the procedure. As with most health services, the price paid for bypass surgery depends largely on the facility performing the operation and the region of the country where it’s located. The cost will also depend on any complications involved. • According to Debt.org, the average cost of heart bypass surgery in the United States is $123,000 . 2 This does not cover the costs of any physical therapy or medications that may be needed post-surgery.

Half (50%) of Americans could not cover an out-of-pocket expense of $1,000, up from 46% in 2021. 8

66.5% of bankruptcies are caused directly by medical expenses, making it the leading cause of bankruptcies. 9
