If you have a surgery coming up, it is natural to feel a little nervous. Thinking about the procedure itself, as well as the necessary amount of time you’ll spend recovering, can seem a bit intimidating. At Hand In Hand Rehabilitation, we want to make sure that your surgery is as smooth as possible and that your recovery process is as quick and easy as possible. Upper extremity surgeries can pose difficult recoveries, as you will likely have to limit the use of the affected arm or immobilize it in a sling. Our Certified Hand Therapists (CHTs) will help in guiding you through your rehabilitation and preparing for your surgery beforehand. To learn more about our hand therapy services and how they can help speed up your recovery time, contact Hand In Hand Rehabilitation today. Preparing for surgery: You may be familiar with rehabilitation after surgery, or post- surgical rehab. It makes sense – your body loses a lot of strength when undergoing a surgical procedure, and rehabilitation treatments are needed in order to help you regain your function. Post-surgical rehabilitation tends to focus on targeted exercises and stretches that are aimed at helping relieve your pain, improve your strength, and redeem your optimum function following your procedure.

While this is necessary to promote healing and recovery, you can also help your body prepare for the process by participating in pre- surgical rehabilitation treatments, as well. Depending on where you are receiving your surgery, your hand therapist can guide you through light exercises and stretches for the hands, wrists, elbows, arms, or shoulders, in order to prepare your body for the procedure ahead. In fact, according to the National Institutes of Health, participating in exercise therapies prior to surgery can exceptionally improve your post-operative outcomes and reduce your recovery time. It is no secret that surgery takes a toll on the body, so preparing yourself beforehand with strengthening stretches and exercises can greatly benefit your results. It can also help you prepare mentally, by giving you a better peace of mind going into surgery, knowing you did everything to make the procedure as easy on you as possible. Much like post-surgical rehabilitation, pre-surgical rehabilitation should always be performed with the assistance of one of our CHTs. Our guided exercises and stretches will focus on improving range of motion, strength, and flexibility, in order to make the surgery as easy as possible on your body.

HOW EFFECTIVE IS PRE-SURGICAL REHABILITATION?

To put pre-surgical rehabilitation into perspective, there are 6 key benefits to participating in it: 1. It decreases pain. 2. It decreases the risk of complications. 3. It increases your stamina. 4. It improves your surgical outcomes. 5. It decreases your recovery time. 6. It may possibly even eliminate your need for surgery altogether! While pre-surgical rehabilitation is not always required in a treatment plan, it is always recommended as a way to yield the best results. The best results are always achieved through treatments before and after surgery. For example, according to an article on shoulder replacement surgery published by the Hofmann Arthritis Institute, “…therapy is not required before surgery, but it is advised to get in the best physical shape possible before surgery to lessen the chance for complication and shorten your recovery time.” The same article also states that “The day after surgery, you will begin working with [hand] therapy to become comfortable using your new shoulder.” This demonstrates how beneficial it is to complete both pre-surgical rehab, and post-surgical rehab, as both are meant to make your recovery process as easy and comfortable as possible.

HOW KINESIO TAPE CAN HELP YOU Kinesio taping has become much more visible in recent years. You have likely seen athletes, gym-goers, and even pregnant women using the colorful muscle tape in strategic positions as a way of easing pressure on their joints and alleviating pain. Kinesio tape is a union of old-school pain management strategies and state-of-the-art medical technology, utilizing aspects of acupressure and strategic hand therapy by placing elastic therapeutic tape around problematic areas. The tape exudes a pulling force, allowing for a free range of motion while still providing a therapeutic pressure to the targeted area. The goal of kinesio tape is to enhance blood circulation at targeted areas, thereby reducing pain and improving recovery time following an injury. Kinesio tape works off the science of kinesiology, which is a fundamental aspect of hand therapy. For kinesio tape to work effectively, the tape must be applied in strategic ways that are designed to follow muscle movement as you move through your day, then the tape can effectively improve healing and reduce pain. To see how kinesio taping can help you, give us a call today!

Instructions Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the farro and allow it to cook at a rolling boil. While the farro cooks, make the dressing. Place all ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Taste-test and add more salt or adjust any seasonings to your liking. After the farro has boiled for about 15 minutes, remove a couple grains and test themfor doneness. The farro should be tenderwith a bit of chewyness when done, but cook it until it’s as firm or soft as you like. The cook time should be in the range of 15 to 20 minutes. When the farro is done cooking, drain it into a strainer. Let the farro sit in the strainer for a few minutes to cool. Place the cooked farro into a large mixing bowl, along with the spinach, avocado, cherry tomatoes, and artichoke hearts. Drizzle the dressing over the salad (use asmuch as you like) and toss to coat. Season the saladwith salt and pepper to taste. Divide onto plates and serve.
