Seedtech Tillage Guide 2021/22

SOWING FOR SUCCESS PRACTICAL ACTIONS FOR

A SUSTAINABLE & PROFITABLE TILLAGE SECTOR

www.seedtech.ie

The Seedtech Autumn Drilling Plan is based on spreading risk across different crops, sowing dates, growing seasons, harvest dates and markets. An analysis of successful tillage businesses shows that having several crop options helps buffer tillage farms against weather and market fluctuations. By starting to drill autumn crops in mid-August with oilseed rape and finishing in mid-November with winter oats, farmers have a 14-week drilling window for Autumn sowing. The Seedtech variety portfolio offers proven choices to help reduce risk within this 14-week drilling window. The Autumn Drilling Plan can guide drilling crops near the optimum drilling dates, help use machinery efficiently, and manage weather variations as we look to get the right crops into the ground. Examples of this are getting off to an early start with ACACIA and AURELIA OSR suitable for sowing from 10th August. LG AVIRON, is an extremely vigorous rape suitable for late drilling and can be very useful when sowing runs late. Following this, from mid-September sowing KWS JOYAU , a BYDV tolerant barley, KWS TAYO, hybrid rye, which is highly tolerant of take-all, and GRAHAM winter wheat, are all suitable for an early sowing slot. BELFRY hybrid barley offers a wide drilling window from the early slot and on into mid-November. No other crop has a data set that proves beyond doubt it delivers on consistency and profitability. HUSKY oats is the most reliable winter and spring oat in Ireland and can be sown from 10th October and on into mid-April. So, by setting out a drilling plan, growers and agronomists can reduce the risk for autumn crops in 2021.

SOWING FOR SUCCESS Seedtech is shaping the future of seed by delivering varieties to tillage farmers to secure a sustainable and profitable future in arable farming for the next generation. Seedtech Trial Site 2021 The Seedtech trials are being conducted on the farms of Stephen Gallwey and David Phelan, Faithlegg, Co. Waterford. The land is fine loamy drift and is part of the Clonroche series. The land has been under excellent management for a long number of years, growing high yielding arable crops, primarily barley, oats, and wheat. Soil fertility is medium/high for the major indices and the land is free draining, lending itself to timely operations. The Seedtech 2021 variety trials are conducted in the following crops: - WOSR, winter and spring beans , spring peas and lupins – 19 varieties in test, 53 plots - Wildflower – production of annual, biennial, and perennial species – 22 species - We also have 240 plots in our winter wheat disease nursery and 280 tussocks for early disease scoring of potential new varieties In total, there are 998 varieties in 2097 plots in trial in 2021 – something for everyone!! Applied Research Trials Seedtech are also conducting applied research trials to support our customers and the wider tillage industry in the following areas: - Winter and spring wheat - 174 varieties in test, 582 plots - Winter and spring barley - 208 varieties in test, 702 plots - Winter and spring triticale, winter rye - 12 varieties in test, 51 plots - Winter and spring oats - 69 varieties in test, 207 plots - Crop physiology of winter barley, winter wheat and winter rye (seed rates, tillering capacity, head counts and final grain number per unit area) – in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology. - Winter malting barley (the role of the nitrogen on yield and malt quality parameters) – in conjunction with the Boortmalt Teagasc Joint Malting Program. - End-user technology platform (targeting varieties suitable for spring milling wheat and spring distilling barley). - Seed dressings in winter and spring barley (endophytes and bio stimulants to improve plant use of nutrients, especially inherent soil fertility) in conjunction with Unium Biosciences. - Seed pathology and seed dressings in spring beans (examining the role of seed dressings on foot rots and flower abortion) – in conjunction with PGRO, UK. - Disease development in early lines of winter wheat and hybrid barley (especially septoria, yellow rust and ramularia) – in conjunction with various breeding partners. - Fungicide disease management in wheat, barley and oats – trials managed by Syngenta Ireland.

KWS JOYAU WINTER BARLEY

KWS JOYAU (French for JEWEL) is a new 6-row conventional winter barley that has BYDV tolerance genes BYDV protection through seed genetics, right through to the harvest Tolerates BYDV infection. Research shows KWS JOYAU performance is not affected by BYDV virus Exceptional yield in DAFM 2019 & 2020 trials Early maturing variety which helps to spread out the harvest Exceptional grain quality with malting potential

GETTING THE MOST FROM KWS JOYAU • Yields normally, even if infected with BYDV (can display symptoms)* • Does not reduce aphid numbers - may require aphid sprays if numbers are very high/feeding • BYDV tolerance lasts to harvest - useful in mild winter/ limited spray days/resistant aphids • Early to grow in spring and early to mature so helps spread the harvest *based on UK and French breeder trials in medium/high BYDV situations

Avoid years 1-3 after ley, suits long term arable rotations Ensure good potassium (K) levels, normal lime and Phosphorous (P) Max 140 kg/ha (112 units/ac) - adjust for organic manures etc Typically LAUREATE receives 125kg N/ha (100 units/ac) to manage lodging and achieve exceptional yields Normal/reduced programs suit LAUREATE as excellent disease resistance Apply PGR to reduce lodging risk such as ccc/moddus/Medax Max at gs 30-32 or Terpal/Medax Max gs 32-39
