Meditations In Luke and John

lone Lowman, Ph.D. v

In certain parts of our country there is sedimentary rock. It was not al ways rock. Once it was soft, shift ing sand, unstable, at the mercy of winds and rain. The play of God’s natural laws changed the sediment to rock. Simon was unstable until he found the Lord, and then he became Peter, the rock man. Jesus needs fol lowers who like Peter can be changed from shifting-sand characters to those of rocklike firmness. The working of God’s spiritual law in our hearts can make us thus. “Lord Jesus, make me a rocklike Christian.” June 9 “Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it” (John 2:5). May we today distinguish between the many demands upon us from others, and the one command from the Lord. He never asks us to do more than one thing at a time. When we have heard Him speak, let us seek His strength to obey that direction, and to say “No” to all other voices. When we seek to please one person only, the challenge in life is a great one. For us Christians, that one Person is our Lord Jesus Christ Himself. June 10 “We speak that we do know” (John 3:11). The Lord spoke out of His knowl edge and experience. If from our knowledge and experience we can give a confident testimony to the all suf ficiency of God, hearts ill at ease, per plexed and weary may be rested, re freshed, and encouraged. Confidence and conviction result from a heart communion with Jesus Christ. Oh, worship in quietness of heart before the throne, and His power will flood your soul with peace unutterable and joy beyond telling. June 11 “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship” (John 4:22). Will we this day meet with thirsty souls who know not what or whom they worship? We know whom we worship; our salvation is from God who has by His grace satisfied the

unstable; perplexities abound; wick edness flourishes; let us look up. In our Lord Jesus is light and peace and steadiness. In His Word is the solu tion to every problem. Dig deeply into its truths, and look up with assurance to Him for sustaining grace and strength. “They looked unto him, and were radiant” (Psa. 34:5 R.V.). June 5 "They . . . found as he had said unto them” (Luke 22:13). Are you hesitant about entering upon the duties of today? The dis ciples went into the city to prepare the passover because Jesus told them to go. They found His promise of cer tain facts to be true. Everything was as He had said it would be. Let us go-forth today in the strength of His promise, and we, too, shall find that His Word never fails; neither does His supply fail to meet all our needs. June 6 “The people stood beholding” (Luke 23:35). We shall walk today among the people. What are they seeing? Lord Jesus, I would have the arresting light of Thy presence strike through me to the consciousness of a thrill seeking company of people. Blaze through me, Lord, and lead some soul to the foot of the Cross today. June 7 “They remembered his words . . . their words seemed to them as idle tales” (Luke 24:8,11). Their words seemed as idle tales. So will our words be except they be en ergized by the Holy Spirit, and become an avenue through which His words are given. They remembered His words. His Word is the sword of the Spirit; faith comes because His Word is heard. Let our words be forgotten, but His words remembered. He says, “The entrance of thy words giveth light.” Pass on the Word. June 8 “Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas . . . A stone” (John 1:42).

June 1 “Men ought always to pray” (Luke 18:1). Do you breathe only once a day, or once a week? “Prayer is the Chris tian’s vital breath” — the atmosphere in which he lives. A well-known preacher said once, “When the dust of busyness fills your room, sprinkle it with prayer, and then it can be cleansed out easily and with expedi tion.” When prayer is more than peti tion, or supplication, or even thanks giving, one finds it easy to pray at all times because his fellowship with God is continuous. June 2 “He sought to see Jesus . . . and could not for the press” (Luke 19:3). Zacchaeus could not see Jesus be cause of the crowd. Is the way clear between you and the Lord, or is a “crowd” interfering with your view of Him? Who are some of the num ber—Miss Laziness, Mr. Pride, Mrs. Self-Will, Tiny Carelessness, Giant Arrogance? Name your own crowd, and then ask the Holy Spirit to remove them so that there will be nothing to obstruct your spiritual view of Christ, nothing to hinder your relationship to Him. June 3 “It may be they will reverence him when they see him” (Luke 20:13). Many have never, seen Christ be cause the image presented has been so distorted by the reflector. Let the Holy Spirit clean and polish me, a mirror, that those who contact me to day may see Him as He truly is. A clean reflector produces an unmarred image of the Saviour who is “alto gether lovely,” the "rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valley.” When they see His beauty, it may be they will turn to Him. June 4 “Then look up” (Luke 21:28). Are the obstacles before you too heavy for you to remove? Are you surrounded by difficulties? Here is your solution: Look up. Our world is
