slaves to-a land of their own, He gave them many laws and commandments. The first of the laws which we call “The Ten Commandments” was: “Thou shalt have no other gods be fore me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image . . . Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them” (Ex. 20:3-5). Those who lived near the Jewish people worshiped idols—gods made from stone or wood or gold. Thes_e gods were not real, for only the Lord God is truly a God—only He can love and care for His children and answer their prayers. God knew that, if His people commenced to worship idols, they would quickly forget to worship Him. Just before the Jewish people reached the new land to which God was leading them, Joshua, their lead er, asked them to choose whether they would worship God or idols. The peo ple replied: “God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods ... . The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey” (Josh. 24:16, 24). In spite of this promise, God’s peo ple soon forgot what He had done for them. They commenced worshiping idols and no longer wanted to serve the Lord God. As you read about the sin of God’s people, Israel, you may be saying, “ I surely would not have forgotten God and worshiped idols if I had lived in those days.” But some of you are wor shiping idols right now! Anything that a Christian puts before God is an idol. Are some of you putting friends, pleasures, sleep, work, or money be fore God? If so, these things are idols in your life. Will you pray that God will help you to put away these idols and then will you worship only Him? Like the Jewish people, will you say: “The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.” LESSON FOR JULY 21, 1946 The Spirit of True Worship LESSON MATERIAL: Deut. 8:11-14, 18- 20; Isa. 40:30, 31; Mark 12:28-34.
