Labelstock Demand Decreases In the first half of 2022, European self-adhesive labelstock consump- tion decreased by 2 percent, com- pared to the same period in 2021, as reported by FINAT in the asso- ciation’s latest RADAR survey. The

decrease came after an increase of 7 percent for the year 2021 (bringing the annual demand to a record 8.5 billion square meters), and an increase of 4.3 percent in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic struck Europe. Market Decline The downturn was driven by the collapse of paper roll label materi- als, especially in the second quar- ter when consumption fell by 8.3 percent compared to the same pe- riod last year. During that same pe- riod filmic roll label materials still increased by a modest 2.2 percent. There are several factors under- lying this reversal of the trend, ac- cording to FINAT. Firstly, the numbers for 2022 follow the two disruptive and volatile years

3D effects on labeling for the brewery’s ‘Wizard’ Gose-style sour ale. The effects appear to be on three different levels: text and graphics on the label surface, a ‘Northern Lights’- type effect seemingly moving within the can itself, and final- ly, at the top of the wizard’s staff, a rotating orb that appears to emerge from the surface of the label. All this was done without the need for lenticular lenses or a

sitive material, and the second screen is printed along with the other decorative inks on top of the clear lamination. Because the microstructures are done at a mini- mum of 480 LPI or higher, the 1:1 pixel-for-pixel accuracy of the FLEXCEL NX Plates was essential to hold lines that are 10 microns wide and spaced approximately 42 microns apart. Stiff Competition In the craft beer business, competition for shelf space and consumers’ attention is fierce in the craft beer business, so impactful labeling is hugely im- portant for a small, independent brewery such as Confluence. In the case of the award-winning la- bel, the ‘Wizard’ branding of the Gose-style sour ale opened all sorts of creative possibilities, with the favored option a multi-dimensional, moving 3D im- age that would capture shoppers’ attention as they walk by, and further engage them as they pick up the can and rotate to explore the image further. “The idea behind Fathom Effects is software-based, not materials science-based,” according to the com- pany. “The foundation of it is to take large-scale computational algorithms and use them to change the way materials interact with light. We compute complex interference patterns that can be printed

holographic foil, using FLEXCEL NX Plates on Grace Label’s standard flexo press using standard inks. Fathom Optics and Grace Label teamed up for the ‘Wizard’ label, which came about because of a friendship between the family of Tom Baran, CEO and Co-Founder of Fathom, and John Martin, own- er/founder of Confluence, to whom Grace Label is an established label supplier. Founded in the mid- 1970s by the father of current company President, Steve Grace, Grace Label operates as a full-service supplier that handles every step of the design-to-de- livery process. Besides the craft beer and spirits in- dustries, Grace also serves customers in meat and agricultural foods. The company has both digital and flexo presses, with flexo printing representing 90 percent of its work. Enhancing Labels A fourth party to the project is creative design agency 818 Iowa, who created the original design and worked with Confluence to enhance the labels most characteristic features — the wizard, staff and orb. Fathom then worked with Grace to bring ev- erything to life. The effects are achieved by printing very fine mi- crostructures on two interference screens. The first screen is printed on the white BOPP pressure-sen-

2020 and 2021, when peaking label demand was heavily influenced by excess demand for essential goods and services after the outbreak of the pandem- ic in 2020, and by rapid economic recovery in 2021. Secondly, since the summer of 2021, global man- ufacturing chains have been suffering from supply chain disruptions caused by Covid-related adjust- ments. This led to a growing gap between booming post-Covid demand and the shrinking availability of energy, raw materials, components, chemicals, pro- duction, labour and transport capacity. Strike Fallout In the first half of 2022, the European label indus- try was particularly hit by the long lasting strike at UPM, a leading paper manufacturer in Finland. Not only did this limit the availability of facestocks for paper labels, but more importantly, a significant share of raw materials supply for paper-based re- lease liners (the siliconized materials carrying the labels) was cut off from the market for more than 100 days. In the first quarter of the year, the effect was dampened by significant inventory surpluses that had been built up in the final quarter of 2021 in anticipation of further increases in lead times and raw materials prices. However, in the second quar- ter output was severely hit with lead times going up to 5-6 months and label converters being served on allocation. Part of the decline in paper label con- sumption may have been absorbed by increases in filmic label demand. In the latest FINAT RADAR, the association’s 6-monthly market survey, it was reported that 60 percent of participating converters, surveyed this spring, had been suffering revenue losses as a re- sult of supply chain issues. Although the strike fin- ished just before Easter, it is expected that backlogs will not be filled before this autumn. Thirdly, by that time, supply side related con- straints may have been overtaken by demand fac- tors, with exponential increases in energy prices, raw materials costs and, ultimately double digit consumer price inflation eating into disposable in- comes and consumer spending, and the dark clouds of the horrific war in Ukraine not expected to clear anytime soon. Demand for self-adhesive roll label materials is a significant indicator of European GDP. Although the correlation between the two has been distorted some- what by the volatile consumption patterns during the ‘Covid years’, part of the downturn points at an eco- nomic shift in Europe in the months to come.

New Research Shows Gen Z Lack Recycling Confidence New data from DS Smith has revealed that a gen- erational gap in recycling is emerging in the UK – with older people more confident than the younger generations when it comes to understanding what and how to recycle. Whilst Gen Z are often considered to be the most environmentally conscious, of all age groups sur- veyed, they have the least confidence when it comes to recycling. The survey showed that they are less confident on what packaging can be recycled (66 percent) than people more than the age of 55 (81 percent), and twice as likely not to know where to find advice on recycling (11 percent), compared to just four percent for people more than 55. Two thirds of Gen Z respondents (67 percent) blame barriers to recycling in the UK, compared to 41 percent for those more than 55, suggesting that changes to the UK recycling infrastructure may be needed to improve recycling among the younger generation. They cite confusion over what recycla- ble items go into which bins (20 percent) and not enough recycling bins from local authorities (16 percent) as issues.

on the front and back surfaces of film. They’re not interference patterns, like in holograms, but signal interference, as in moiré.” If the technology behind Fathom is relatively complex, for end users adding special effects it is remarkably straightforward. Designers simply drop files into Fathom Designer, a free online tool, where they assign motion and depth effects which can be previewed and shared with other stakeholders. “Large multinational consumer product groups of- ten don’t want to get into new things because the qualification process for a new material can take months, even years,” according to Fathom Optics. “But because our technology uses the same sub- strates, inks and flexo presses, no qualification pro- cess is required, and they can get to market faster. And, as we’re not adding a dissimilar material, like a lenticular lens or a hologram, there’s a sustainability advantage because recycling or reuse is easier. All these factors add a whole new level of acceptance.” With Fathom Effects technology now onboard- ed at more than 40 production sites, and strong interest from brands both large and small, 3D ef- fects will be coming to more and more supermarket aisles before long.

The acquisition earns Constantia Flexibles its first consumer plant in the UK. FFP Packaging Solutions was founded in 1967; it now operates with more than 100 employees. The producer of recyclable laminates offering flow wraps, lidding films, and pre-made pouches reportedly generates more than 80 percent of its Sales in sustainable packaging. Avery Dennison Debuts Wine And Spirits Adhesive With wine and spirits makers moving to heavi- er labelstocks to support premium positioning and capitalize on marketplace growth, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials has introduced a new adhesive to its Wine and Spirits Portfolio in response to wine and spirit mak- ers moving to heavier labelstocks. Heavy Support The Avery Dennison Z2010 adhesive is reportedly engineered to support heavier facestocks and won’t float or show lift for up to eight hours while sub- merged in ice or cold box, according to the manu- facturer. Applying labels to wine and sparkling wine bot- tles when they are cooler than their surroundings and slick with surface condensation is easier with Z2010, said Avery Dennison. In addition to its aggressive initial tack that en- sures heavier, embellished labels stay firmly ad- hered, the Z2010 adhesive also reportedly offers improved tight mandrel performance.

Originally scheduled to take place February 14- 16, 2023, just sixteen months after the last event edition in 2021, the event will now be held in Janu- ary 2024, returning to the Orange County Conven- tion Center in Orlando, Florida. Historically taking place every two years, the 2021 event was postponed to the fall of last year. This new shift of dates to 2024 allows 27 months of sep- aration between the shows. After 2024, the show will continue to take place in the early part of the even numbered years.
