Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 2007

WORD OF LIFE BIBLE INSTITUTE LIBRARY

The words of this timeless hymn have echoed through countless sanctuaries of churches during the past century. The sole focus of this hymn is a relentless pursuit of God from beginning to end. This year at the Word of Life Bible Institute, the theme has been " Vision: God's Plan in Motion ." From the very beginning we were instructed, “The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart.” As the words so elegantly state, “Be Thou my Vision, Oh Lord of my heart,” the only way we could have had a successful year was by concentrating on the part of each and every one of us that God desperately desires, our hearts. “Belief determines behavior,” Executive Dean Ric Garland said. The beginning of God’s plan for our lives had to begin with God’s plan for our hearts. Through stretching experiences of ministry, tough academics and sometimes trying roommates, God * challenged the allegiance of our hearts. What was our motivation as we learned from the 'professors? Interacted in our dorms? Ministered to others? it The vision of our leadership this year has been life change. This life change wa's icted to the students by any means. It had to begin with the staff. We out this year through people who were willing to set aside their own SL .' 2*3 o *

Leadership is the ability to lead. Spiritual leadership is moving people on to God's agenda. This year w as a year of leadi ng the student body on to God's a g edna for discipleship. The leadership had an undeniabel passion for discipleship that w as evident throughout the year. The enti re staff was i n vo vl ed in t he duplication process. We, the students, are the product of this passion. A passion has been ignited within our hearts as well. We can go out from this place recreating the same passi on in others. “ Every year I have t rei opportunity to facilitate f ive hundred missionaries,” Ric Garland said. This b e ga n wi th a passionate v isi on to lead others on to God’s agenda for discipleship. Tnis has to begin right where we are. We thank God for the leadership He has provided throughout this school year.

After completing his diploma at the Word of Life Bible Institute in 1977, he continued his education at Tennessee Temple University. While at Tennessee Temple, Ric heard Jack Wyrtzen speak in a chapel service. Ric, following the service, went up to meet Jack Wyrtzen and the Word of Life Local Church Ministries staff. Among the staff who accompanied Jack was Mike Calhoun, who began to disciple Ric and remains one of his best friends to this day. A Tribute to Dr. Charles U Wagner

Many second year students may remember the day in first year, at the New York campus, when Dr. Charles Wagner, while teaching the book of Ephesians, arrived back late from a class break. Surely no one expected the news that Dr. Wagner brought. He had phoned his doctor and received the news of test results that confirmed cancer. It was after a long battle with this cancer that Dr. Wagner went home to be with his Lord. Year after year, students would wonder what Dr. Wagner’s middle name was. The “U” would always cause a certain amount of curiosity and the unconventional answer was not a disappointment. “Uhle,” Dr. Wagner would reply after the students had exhausted every guess. He went on to explain that his father gave him his middle name after George Uhle, a favorite baseball player of the early twentieth century. The students of Dr. Wagner owe him a debt of gratitude. His extensive knowledge of the Bible was truly impressive. Students can recall Dr. Wagner as he taught straight out of the Word of God, tackling his material verse by verse, the unmistakable style of a lifetime expository preacher. Dr. Wagner held a special place in his heart for Biblical education. He served as a professor at Bible institutes, colleges and as the president of a few seminaries. In truth, Dr. Wagner’s passion was in the pastorate. He pastored several churches across the United States in Michigan, New Jersey, Washington and Kentucky. He devoted over fifty years of his life to full-time ministry. The Lord called Dr. Charles Wagner home on October 22, 2006. His life verse, an ideal vision for all of us, was 2 Corinthians 3:18. “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.’’ The hope and faith of Charles Uhle Wagner has now come to fruition. He is in the presence of Almighty God whom he loved and served with all of his heart, soul and strength.

How did some of the best pizza end up in Pottersville, New York? No one knows for sure, but there were a lot of New York students who greatly appreciated Mobil Pizza this year. God works in mysterious ways. A climb up Mount Severance allowed students to see the beauty of God’s creation right before them. One of the unique aspects of the New York Campus is its close proximity to Word of Life Headquarters. This allowed the students to interact with some of the full-time staff in a meaningful way. One of our greatest assets was having Ric Garland, a man of integrity and vision. He was a man with a few hats - Executive Dean and Father. Ellen Garland’s passion for the young women on campus was a great inspiration to all of the students, especially those whom she sought to minister and disciple.

Life Bible Institute, presented a great deal of unique opportuni ties and featured a smaller student body than New York which allowed for the students to develop a close-knit environment. One of the most unique ministry opportunities during the year, was the Gospel Production's presentations of the "Sights & Sounds of Christmas " and "Jesus, Behold the Man." Thousands flooded the Harry Bollback Performing Arts Center, located on the Florida campus, and as a result many accepted Christ as Savior. Another unique aspect of the Florida campus was the RV Park. It was great to see and hear about God’s grace in the lives of these people. Throughout the summer, the campus took on a different look as it was converted into Word of Life’s Florida Youth Camp. The students were able to see God’s plan in motion in all different ages through the unique and exciting ministry of the Word of Life Bible Institute Florida extension.

There is only one relationship that really matters, and that is your personal relationship to your personal Redeemer and Lord. If you maintain that at all costs, letting everything else go, God will fulfill His purpose through your life. One Individual life may be of priceless value to God's purposes, and yours may be that life. -Oswald Chambers

Although from year to year, some of the faces may change, the philosophy of the staff in New York remains the same. It is to be an influence in the lives of the students and impact their lives. The motto put forth by a certain unnamed Executive Dean is “Life Change: First Ours, Then Theirs.” The Apostle John wrote, “I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth.” As the students learn to walk in truth, the staff can rejoice with John as those they have influenced follow God more closely.

I swore I would never attend second year...during second year I swore would never be an intern...and now I’ve decided not to be so set on my plans! This year, working in the Reachout office has been such a blessing! God has continued to use the Bl to mold my faith in ways I would have never dreamed! Unlike being a student, interning forces you to decide whether or not you’re going to live by the principles you’ve studied, what your priorities are and what your walk with the Lord is going to look like on a day to day basis. The most amazing blessing is the continued discipleship that I have with a staff lady who has been such an answer to prayer! The opportunity to be involved in the ensemble has been such a privilege as well as another one of God’s teaching tools! But most of all, I’d have to say that I’m most thankful for my roommates, their lives are such a challenge and encouragement to me as I watch them serve the Lord in their everyday lives!

The first year program of the Word of Life Bible Institute was designed to give the student a foundation in the Word of God. Bible Survey, Theology and numer ous guest lecturers offered the student a wide avenue of learning on which to tread. It was a year of transition in which many students spent their first time away from home, some in much colder weather than what they wanted.

Coming to Word of Life Bible Institute has impacted my life in a way I never thought it would. As a new believer I wasn’t prepared for all that I was about to go through. I came with a lot of issues on my heart and one by one they have been dealt with. My first conviction was realizing that I was living a life of hypocrisy and I needed to get my life right with the Lord. A step that I had to take in order to have a better relationship with my spiritual father, I had to learn how to forgive my biological father. Once I forgave my father, I prayed for his salvation for the very first time. That weekend he called me just to talk and at the end of the conversation he said, “I love you." I never imagined being in a place where the staff is so involved in the student’s life. Through the dis- cipleship program at WOLBI, I have been able to meet once a week with a staff member, it has been a positive spiritual impact in my life. I have been able to take responsibility of my sin and the courage to face my problems in order to be set free. Starting my winter quarter, I was very excited about Snow Camp. When it was my first time counsel ing that week I got some very bad news about my younger brother. I felt like a failure and I wanted to just pack up to go home. God was able to use me to encourage my campers. At the end of my weekend counseling I was able to talk with my younger brother and share the Gospel with him. My brother made the most important decision of trust ing in Christ alone. What a blessing in my life because the Lord gave me the opportunity to lead my brother to Christ. 2 . _

T o m S i m s I have seen the name of Jesus Christ displayed during my time here at WOLBI. have grown and changed in more ways than I will ever be aware of. Honestly, this place is more my home than anywhere I have ever lived and the students here are my family. We all live, laugh, love, pray and experience Jesus together. What more could ask for?

i grew up in unristian Tamiiy, dui Jesus came to me wnen i was nineteen years oia. but notn- ing changed in my lifestyle. I was a banker maybe one of the very successful one in my voca tion. However, God didn't allow me to be in good health, my doctor called me up and told me a bad news, ‘that I have a cancer and it has to go through the operation as soon as possible.' And he even added “that I should have came much sooner.'' Everyday I was wondering why it happened to me?! I felt even worse when I was moved to a room where a lady had a serious liver cancer at its closing stage. Even though there was a curtain, her scream in deadly pain was penetrating through to my ears and my soul in fear. I was literally witnessing ‘the death’ for the first time in my life. But you know what? Even under the hopeless situation, one thing that she did not cease to do was calling her kids back home and telling them she loved them. Then the Lord showed me so clearly that this was what Jesus has done for me. Right after leaving the hospital, I was trained in a missionary community and I went to eight-country mission trips. At that time, I felt that need to know more Bible study and I went to the Bl. I realized, I cannot live without God because God is my life so God is changing my life.

H e never said it would be easy; Hejust

These are the wise words of a friend who has always encouraged me to rely on God's strength through good and bad. The past two years that I have been here at Word of Life that is a lesson God has been teaching me time and time again. I am the kind of person who hates to ask for help and loves to accomplish things on my own. As a born-again believer, that stubbornness does not help me in my walk with Christ Jesus. I believe that when God really started showing me this was when I had to go for the weekend to New York City for OAE in the fall of last year. I was scared out of my mind. He continued to teach me this lesson during snow camp and then at the Island. So many times God put me in situations where I didn’t know what to say to a hurting girl or could do nothing for her except hold her, cry with her, and pray for her. God’s strength is the only thing that carried me through the eight weeks at the Island last year. It is also the only thing that helps me to take care of the responsibilities He has entrusted to me this year. ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' -Phil. 4:13"

My dad passed away in 1986 when I was three years old which left my mum to take care of five children. Being raised in a godly home I thought that I would go to heaven because I was good. However on January 1,1991, my mum took my younger brother and me into her room and she started to tell us about God’s love. She mentioned about Jesus Christ coming down to the world to die for our sins. I listened carefully as she went through the scripture with me and clearly explained how to have a personal relationship with Him. Finally, I made a profession of Faith and Iasked Jesus Christ to come into my heart to be my personal Savior. In 2 0 0 4 1met my WOL director in Papa New Guinea. He asked me to come and attend the WOL ministry. I went on board and was fascinated about how the ministry was functioning. God really touched my heart and I saw there was a need for laborers (Matt. 9:36-37) In 2 0 0 5 ,1quit my studies at college and went on full time to serve in the ministry. Coming to WOL was an eye opener for me, and I learned stuff that I had never heard of before. Also, it was a privilege to listen to well known professors and to learn new truths about the Word of God each day. Looking back to last year and coming into this year,I can see myself in new heights in my spiritual Life. God has really blessed me with so many wonderful people who poured their lives into me. I am so grateful for what God has done for me... Amen!

Either way, they came because they knew God wanted them to learn more at Word of Life; to take part in the ministry-focused classes and to be an example to a first year student. The life of a second year student was one of even more stretching and growing in God’s guidance.

There were not many things that I knew about WOLB! when the Lord’s mighty hand brought me here. Many rules assured me there was some kind of mistake in my visa or flight. I felt like I came to the wrong place to the extent that I asked myself, “Am I in North Korea?” However, it did not take long to realize that the Lord had a better plan. On one occasion a great truth came into my mind. It is all about His Glory and not mine. He loves me, but the purpose behind it is to glorify Himself. He deserves every aspect of my life. I started to look at things differently and found so much joy and comfort within. “I was revived!" Ten years from now, if anyone asks me what the best thing that I learned from WOLBII will probably say, “This place is a unique place that you can practice what you ave learned from the Bible, not just knowing it and being a hypocrite.” Paul said, “This one thing I doxforgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before."(Phillppians 3:13)

I I was privileged enough to have grown up in a Christian home and at the age of five I knelt down beside my bed with my mother and accepted the Lord as my Savior. Unfortunately, as I began to get older, circumstances in my life drove me away from the principles with which I had grown up. My teenage years were a blur and just involved me doing whatever I saw fit. It took nothing less than an act of God to get me to come to the Bible Institute. When I arrived here last fall, I knew something was different. Everyone around me seemed to have a joy that I was missing out on. It didn’t take me long to see that I was missing out on an intimate relationship with the Lord through His Word. The process of change over the last year and a half has been immense, but it has been incredible to watch and experience the Lord, through His Word, completely change not only my behavior, but who I am as a person. Words like purity, integrity, faithfulness and devotion that once meant nothing to me, have now become things that I seek after for the glory of God. Though my future may be uncertain, I know for sure that the things I have learned in these two years I will carry with me for the rest of my life" "One of the biggest things that I have been learning from God the last few years is that He is the one who has the right to control my life. Living in Pottersville, or more specifically, attending WOLBI was something I never planned on doing. Pottersville is an unknown, inconspicuous little corner of the world! God took me through some unexpected twists and turns to lead me here though. These two years at WOLBI have been a time where I have learned more about the God I worship and I have grown closer to Him. He really does know what He is doing. I look forward to seeing what new corner of the world God will direct me to after I leave here." “God has blessed me so much the past two years as I have been attending the Word of Life Bible Institute. I have grown so much in my walk with the Lord whether I have been sitting under some of the greatest lecturers in the world or just hanging out with friends who always strengthen me spiritually. Word of Life has done so much for me and I thank God with all of my heart for allowing me to come here and providing the finances. I couldn't have come here if it wasn’t for God and my family who each have supported me all the way. I appreciate Word of Life because it has given me a firm foundation for the future and a firm grounding in the Word of God." in a good, strong Christian home and thought that was enough, but I was wrong. After many bad decisions on my part, I wound up at Word of Life as a getaway from my lifestyle. I cannot even recognize the old me from 1st year at the Bl. I thought it was the best year I had ever had. The opportunity to get into the Word every day was life-changing. Now that I am in 2nd Year I can see and put into practice what I learned my first year and 2nd Year blows 1st Year out of the water. Ps. 27:4 m a in “I never thought that I would end up at a Bible Institute. I grew up

These students barely had time to unpack before they were swept u into the snowcamp season. Arriving In January, these brave souls had to learn the ropes quickly while trying to adjust to the new campus. Students welcomed these fresh faces and the friendships that were made.

u Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature...” Jesus commanded this to the twi K/e disciples in Mark 16:15. Christ, of course, was referring to The Great Commission. But a great way to bring people to Christ or to help them grow in their spiritual walk is by helping them become an International Student here at Word of Life Bible Institute. We were excited to have students from all over the world. However, for each of them the irocedure was quite lengthy. Becoming a student in America starts with the school application process, then settir g up an interview at the American Embassy in their home country, and ends with being accepted or rejected, plus all the practices that had to take place in tfetween. The entire process was costly and time consuming, but it turnec into a big reward when they were acceptec and given an opportunity to come to America. This wasn't just valuable f j each of them, but for all of us here as well. Here, at WOBLI, we were very fortunate to have our International Students and were excited they could study (God's Word with us.

A/e’ve joked about them all year long, but eventually we :ame to grips with the fact that the WOLBI deans gave js RAs to keep us in line. They not only handed out discipline points but they also helped many of us grow hrough discipleship. Without the RAs, this year at Word )f Life would not have been as fulfilling at it was. The staff of the Word of Life Campus is truly unique. Coming from different backgrounds and many different college degrees, and walks of life they have pulled together their talents to be used in the lives of the students. Many of our staff embody numerous job descriptions but the one job description they have in common is to be an influencer and encourager in the students lives. Their vision has been to see their students grow and mature in their walk with Christ and to go out and be used to impact those around them and the world.

The Bl to me has been an opportunity to develop my faith through the discipline of biblical principles, the indepth ministry programs and the constant influence of the Word of God. Through the Bl I have obtained lasting relationships, extensive Bible knowledge and a foundation on which I can build the rest of my life upon. I thank God every day for the ministry of Word of Life and the influence it has had on my personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

I I was saved when I was in the 6th grade at a church my parents were regularly attending. Unfortunately, because I was not faithful in my church attendance and did not have a leader guiding my walk with the Lord, I slipped into a lifestyle that slowly took me farther from the Lord. For years I was involved with kids who were living for the moment, feeling as if there was something I was missing out on and wondering why my faith was never real to me. When I was a sophomore in high school I began attending church and eventually I began to understand what it meant to develop my own faith and have a relationship with the Lord. At camp I was introduced to WOLBI and about a year later decided it was something I wanted to do. Since I’ve been at the B.I., I have been challenged in so many aspects of my walk. Not only have I learned a great deal of knowledge from classes but have also developed my relationship with the Lord through ministries and my RA job. This year, God brought me to my limits and showed me what He was capable of doing in my life if I just handed over the reigns. My perspective of the Lord has changed my thoughts, my words, my attitude, everything. The decision I made to give one year for the Lord has been the greatest decision I have ever made. AMAZING!
