Message from the Dean 2021-2022
Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to share the 2021-2022 Faculty and Staff Yearbook, an annual tradition of recording and celebrating scholarly and creative activity, administrative achievements, honors received, and fond farewells to those retiring after years of service to the college and university. As this yearbook attests, our faculty engaged in a rich variety of scholarly and creative work and our staff implemented numerous operational initiatives that improved college operations. While these undertakings are noted piecemeal throughout the year in our newsletter and blog, the yearbook gives us a more complete portrait of our college as a place of innovation, productivity, and inspiration. I would like to thank Allison DeVries for overseeing the development of the Faculty and Staff Yearbook, and the Ideation Lab for the design. In addition, I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to faculty member Dr. Robert Slayton (History) for his lifelong commitment to excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service and to Senior Administrative Assistant Kristen Laakso (English) for her unwavering dedication to English faculty and students. We wish them well in their retirement. Congratulations to our faculty and staff on a wonderful year!

Retirement Feature KRISTEN LAAKSO Senior Administrative Assistant, Department of English Kristen Laakso retired as the Senior Administrative Assis tant for the Department of English. For the past ten years, Kristen has been an integral part of the English Department and Wilkinson College. Kristen started her -
time at Chapman as the Department of English’s Adminis trative Assistant. In the years to come Kristen would come to oversee almost every aspect of the department’s administra tive functions. She oversaw the rapid growth and development of both the department, and its faculty and students, into one of the largest departments of the university. Her insight and experience were essential in department programing and sup port. It came as no surprise when she was promoted to Senior Administrative Assistant in 2019. - - - To Wilkinson College, Kristen represented a pillar of institu tional history. Many of her colleagues turned to her for sup port—professionally and personally. Most of all, Kristen’s time at Chapman will be remembered for her kindness. As one colleague wrote, “Kristen helped whenever she could, which ultimately makes our university work. Because she helped me, I was able to give more to my students and to the larger community. I feel Kristen was a partner in these efforts, for she always has the bigger picture in mind. I am grateful to her for her organization, her institutional knowledge, her ability to be an integral part of our department, at the center in many ways… I am also grateful for Kristen’s presence in the office, for creating community, for being there when I just needed to talk through an issue or ask a quick question or share a classroom moment. She was genuinely there. She has the gift of care and gave it freely.” - - Her contributions will always be valued and remembered. Kristen’s hard work, commitment, and dedication are worthy of admiration. Kristen, we are really going to miss you!

DR. ROBERT (BOB) SLAYTON Professor Emeritus, Department of History Dr. Slayton joined the History Department in the fall of 1988 as an Assistant History Professor. Throughout the years he has been honored with several awards, such as Wang-
Fradkin Professorship in 2002 (University’s highest award for scholarly or creative activity), Jerrel T. Richards Professorship in 2001, and the Valerie . Scudder Award for Outstanding Teaching in 1995 and 1990 (first professor in the history of the university to receive the award twice), just to name a few. He was the first C apman professor (and still one of the very few) to have an op-ed published in the Sunday New York Times . Slayton is the author of eight books, including Empire Statesman: The Rise and Redemption of Al Smith (The Free Press), Back of the Yards (University of Chicago Press), New Homeless and Old (Temple University Press), and Master of the Air (University of Alabama Press). Back of the Yards was chosen by Choice, the library journal, as one of its “Outstanding Books” of that year, while New Homeless was awarded Honorable Mention for the Paul Davidoff Award by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. He shows no sign of slowing down. Slayton is almost done with his ninth book (on the history of movies and New York City) and has two more in mind to write during his retirement. In addition to being an amazing teacher and prolific author, he’s described as a pillar and an elder statesman of the History Department. After a long, illustrious career, Dr. Slayton was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus of History. E h
