NEWS UPPER WILDWOOD CREEK BASIN PROJECT FUNDED
Yucaipa…The Upper Wildwood Creek Basin Project has been successful- ly funded by direct budget action by the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors and the placement in the recently passed California State Budget. By working in collaboration, Supervisor Dawn Rowe and Assembly Chad Mayes made the case to fund a project that will help ensure our region’s water resilience in the face of current and future droughts. Supervisor Rowe helped negotiate $880,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and Assemblyman Mayes successfully advocated to the Gov- ernor and the State Assembly to allocate $1,800,000 from the budget signed earlier this year. “While partisan gridlock dominates the news these days, having Super- visor Dawn Rowe as a partner is a perfect example of how government should work. Dawn’s tenacity is on full display with the funding for The Upper Wildwood Creek Basin Project,” said Mayes. The Upper Wildwood Creek Basin Project is a flow-through retention/de- tention system that will temporarily store a specified volume of storm- water runoff before it begins to discharge the stormwater at a controlled rate. This proposed basin will have an estimated stormwater capacity of 25 acre-feet (8.1 million gallons) and is anticipated to capture and recharge approximately 250 acre-feet of stormwater during an average rainfall year. Additionally, the basin maintenance roads will provide all weather access to cross Wildwood Creek, providing connectivity to exist- ing and future trails. “A perfect collaboration between State and Local Officials”
Supervisor Dawn Rowe said, “This critical funding will help with flood control protection, improve water quality, and promote environmental restoration. I want to thank Assemblyman Mayes for his advocacy and for helping to secure state funding to make this important project a reality.” Mayor David Avila said, “On behalf of the City of Yucaipa and my col- leagues on the City Council, I would like to express our gratitude and thanks for the outstanding support we received from San Bernardino County Supervisor Dawn Rowe and Assemblymember Chad Mayes. Be- cause of their leadership, hard work, and dedication, the City will be able to start construction on the Upper Wildwood Creek Basin Project.” In addition to water resilience, this funding, along with an allocation from the City’s Capital Improvement Program, will benefit the sur- rounding environment by defending against erosion and providing flood control protection within the area and will also facilitate groundwater recharge opportunities, improve downstream water quality, and protect downstream public and private properties from flooding.
