CHARACTER & WELLBEING Character and MANifesto awards prove popular

In keeping with the ethos of College, new Character and MANifesto awards have been introduced to encourage both staff and boys to work together to see students holistically.

MANifesto award forms for Years 12 and 13, explaining what is being acknowledged and identifying why they have decided to nominate the student. Caroline administers the forms, with the nominated boys invited to a monthly morning tea with Executive Principal Garth Wynne. At the end of the year a new award recognising character – the Charles Upham Award – will be made to one student in each year group.

Rather than just rewarding students for their academic

“It’s been fantastic to see teachers supporting these new awards. The reception from staff has been so positive. It really is about Each boy at his best and acknowledging a whole range of strengths. There’s no hierarchy to strengths, each is equally important. And this is also about developing the relationships between teachers and boys.” It’s a simple process for teachers. They simply fill in Character award forms for Years 9–11 and

endeavours, as was the case with the previous merit card system, the new awards – for boys who embody any of College’s 24 identified character strengths – acknowledge personal growth and development. Teacher Caroline Black, who has been responsible for driving the new awards, is heartened by the uptake.
