Here we continue the series, started in the previous issue of College , featuring a cross section of boys who demonstrate one or more of the character strengths we believe will enable our students to flourish.
Eden Pidgeon – Year 12 Corfe House Social Intelligence
Once Eden gets interested in something, he exhibits a completely genuine fascination for it. Take Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, “all more difficult this year than last, but I like finding out about new stuff. I just like doing things.” Studies aside, the 1st Dan in karate is out Monday and Wednesday nights teaching other teenagers and taking classes at his karate club where he has trained for the last 13 years. “I just love teaching it.” He is also a fencing champion, taking third place in the individual competition and first in the teams’ event at the recent fencing nationals, and regularly getting great results. “I do a lot of sport, in fact, nearly every day of the week I’m doing some kind of sport.” Eden’s personality means he is easy to talk to and equally comfortable with adults or his peers.
William Koko – Year 12 Rolleston House Bravery, Perspective
He is the youngest of five boys, but William Koko still got a shock when he arrived at College in Year 9. Its scale and the number of boys was daunting; the House system helped him settle and provided a great network of close mates. “The House opens lots of doors. The music competitions are a lot of fun, while drama … well, I’ve been in every House Play since Year 9.” He likes delving into topics, especially New Zealand history, and he enjoys public speaking. Concussions curtailed some sporting activities, but he has been in the rowing squad since U15 grade, plays squash in winter, and is a member of both the Environment and Service committees. “College has given me the opportunities to not get lost in the crowd, and has helped me get the best out of myself.”
