Bruce Chen – Year 10 Condell's House Love of Learning, Perseverance
Thimeth Wijesinghe – Year 10 Julius House Love of Learning, Perseverance Thimeth has a healthy curiosity and likes to be busy. For him, keeping busy means working on a Science Fair project on the mental health and wellbeing of teenagers in Christchurch, and he has sent out a survey to all College Houses as a start. He also has a cologne bottle project, stemming from a DVC project, on the go, and is a poet, having written three poems for the annual College poetry competition. He took part in both the EPro8 and Cantamath competitions. “In the EPro8, we were leading, but finished fourth.” Success in Cantamath proved elusive, too. “Losing is bitter, but I try to consider it as a blessing because it makes me work harder and teaches me to persevere.” Thimeth says it may sound clichéd, “but taking opportunities is what life’s all about, because they take you places.” Biology, Mathematics and English are his favourite subjects, and he has some plans to serve humankind. “But I’m just living in the moment, and taking it one step at a time.” It was a big step to come from Fernside Primary to boarding life at College, but Ed Davidson found keeping busy was the answer. He threw himself into everything on offer, especially drama, and has been involved in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, The Frogs junior production, and the REACTION House Plays Festival. “It’s been pretty cool to be involved, and to get to know lots of people. It’s helped me settle in to College.” Drama, History, English and Music are his favourite subjects, and he is also in the Chapel Choir and plays guitar in a band. Practices fill up lots of time. “As soon as you have a couple of things on, you get things done, and the busier I am the better I feel.” In summer Ed plays tennis, and in winter he enjoys basketball. Tournament week was a big thrill. The routines of College life, while strange at the beginning, have been great in helping him be organised, self-directed and motivated, he says. “They help you build your own determination.” Edward Davidson – Year 9 Flower's House Curiosity, Love of Learning Bruce is an innovator who likes to be challenged. Over the past year he has taught himself to design apps and is pleased that his College Clock on the Schoolbox dashboard is currently viewed regularly by about 250 users. Any spare time he has is spent learning and refining, but “it’s just an interest, and I have a lot of others as well.” He is currently working with others on an economics project offering a tutoring service connecting seniors with juniors. “I’m in charge of the tech side. It would be great for it to start running before NCEA examination week.” A music scholar who plays both piano and violin, Bruce is in the Chamber Orchestra, College Orchestra, plus various chamber groups, and is taking his ATCL examination in piano this year. He plays hockey and volleyball, and worked backstage on College productions Private Peaceful and The Frogs .
