College – Issue 37

Many Old Boys travelled from all over New Zealand and Australia to attend, but a special mention must go to Dan Foulds (11107), who came all the way from Sweden for 72 hours. I would like to thank those that chipped in to cover the costs of the reunion. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Christ's College for hosting us, and our coaches John Mills and Andrew Maclennan and manager BDL for making the effort to attend. And a very special thanks to all my former teammates for providing me with some great memories. See you all in 25 years time.

The following day we met at Jacobs House for morning tea, where Executive Principal Garth Wynne welcomed us and talked about future plans for the school and current achievements. There has been some impressive building development on campus, and under his leadership an increase in numbers attending the school. We feel very confident in the direction being taken for College to continue to provide the very best of education in the future. A tour of the school was provided by Derek Banks (6247), who was his usual entertaining self. Derek has a wealth of knowledge due to his long association with College and the CCOBA. After that, we enjoyed lunch in the Dining Hall with current students and other Old Boys, before heading to Straven Road – where, unfortunately, we witnessed another loss. Hopes were high given the half-time score, but the pressure was too much in the second half. A familiar pattern continues. Drinks on the Terrace organised by the CCOBA followed, before we adjourned for a pleasant dinner in Merivale. We look forward to another reunion, and victory, in the near future.

The 2019 College vs Christchurch Boys’ High School match brought together members of the two teams from 1969, celebrating and remembering what was (in 1969) a very entertaining and close match on Upper – CBHS won 19–14, with College having been in front with 20 minutes left to play. Andrew Hay organised a function at No. 4 in Merivale the night before the fixture, although with limited College representation due to some members being overseas. Nevertheless, we shared lots of great memories and enjoyed the chance to meet again with those present. Sadly, five players from each team have passed away in recent years, including Phil Cook (7668), Derek Hart (7686), Mark Thompson (8150), Tom Suckling (7757) and David Rutherford (7748) from College, and Alistair Dick, John Calder, Peter Hayward, Ian Webster, and Wayne Strathern from CBHS.
