Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 2004

Dr. John Whitcomb is one of the most loved professors of WOLBI students from the past and the present.

“I want to know everything God said and tell everybody exactly what He said.” One of the unique and exciting elements of the Word of Life curriculum is the weekly rotation of guest lecturers. Various well-known authors and speakers, seasoned in their study of the scriptures, arrive to WOLBI each week to impart godly wisdom upon the student body. For one such guest, this weekly visit has become an annual tradition. For the past four decades, God has enabled Dr. John C. Whitcomb to come and share his extensive knowledge of the Old Testament with students of both the first and second year classrooms. A graduate of both Princeton University and Grace Theological Seminary, Dr. Whitcomb bears knowledge in a variety of subjects. From Old Testament History, to Bible Prophecy, to Creation and the Genesis Flood, Dr. Whitcomb has dedicated his life to the teaching and writing of such topics. Beginning his teaching career in 1951, Dr. Whitcomb taught at Grace Theological Seminary until 1990 when he began taking his work abroad speaking as a guest lecturer in universities, seminars, and seminaries all over the world. In fact, the only major area of the world in which Dr. Whitcomb has not been is the continent of Antarctica! The truth of the Word of God was revealed to Dr. Whitcomb at the age of eighteen during his early years at Princeton University. A traveling missionary and graduate of Princeton had returned to teach a course on the Bible to anyone who was interested. After a few of his classes, the missionary was able to share personally with Dr. Whitcomb the saving grace of Jesus Christ and, as Dr. Whitcomb says, “I’ve never recovered!” Meeting the woman that was to become his bride Dr. Whitcomb was married in the year 1953. After seventeen years of marriage, Mrs. Whitcomb passed away leaving Dr. Whitcomb with four children to care for on his own. Upon remarrying to his wonderful wife Norma, he received two more children and for a time lived under a roof with six children under the age of seventeen! Dr. Whitcomb attests to the wonderful blessing of not ony his six children but the seventeen grandchildren God has given him as well. Authoring and co-authoring over ten books, charts, and video series leaves little room for spare time in the life of Dr. Whitcomb. Yet when he does have a few moments to relax we could easily find him either going for a swim or playing with his dog ,Tabbie, whom Dr. Whitcomb assures us, smiles at him when they play. With 2 Timothy 2:1-3 inspiring him to teach and entrust the Word to reliable men, his hope is that each of his listeners would not pass time idly but would go on to teach others that which they have learned. As the staff and students ofWord of Life Bible Institute, we are truly grateful for such a sound man of the Word, for his dedication to its teachings, and the godly example of a life being lived u...on the victory side.”
