Touching lives that have lost it all Helping with Hurricane Katrina
For three weeks this fall, ninety students from the Florida Bible Institute traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, to offer aid to those who had been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Residents from the area had returned to their homes to find them severely damaged; repairs were estimated to cost thousands of dollars and weeks to finish. With the help of the students, however, many people were able to have their homes fixed at no cost. After these kind acts, the New Orleans’ residents were very open to hearing about the source of the students’ joy and willingness to serve: Jesus Christ. The Hurricane Katrina Relief Project had an impact on the individual students as well. Living in a nearby church and sleeping on cots, they experienced what it was like to give up a few comforts to help people who had lost it all. While they drove through neighborhoods and witnessed the devastation of so much property and the loss of many possessions, the students were reminded that their real treasure should be in Heaven. Though the things of earth can be destroyed, the lasting effect of a relationship with Christ will never pass away.
