Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 2008

WORD OF LIFE BIBLE INSTITUTE LIBRARY

Credibility - It means worthy of belief. In more practical terms it means to live out what you say you believe. This year at the Bible Institute, we desired more than anything to challenge your belief system and to encourage you to live your life according to Biblical Principles. I believe that if you think and believe Biblically, you will behave Biblically. I don’t believe that you will leave the Bible Institute and do your Quiet Time at 6:45 every morning. But, my prayer is that you will see the value and need of spending time with God on a regular basis no matter what time it is! I don’t believe that you will be in your rooms at 10:30 every night or that you will have devos with your siblings or that you will carry your toothpaste back to your room when at home! But, my prayer is that you would have learned responsibility. I don’t believe that you will write out a special permission to spend time at a friends house or that you will run into church so as to

not be late. I also do not believe that you will wear a tie to church all the time. But, my prayer is that you will have learned to communicate and be sensitive to others. I don’t believe that all of you will do open air evangelism in New York City every year. Or that you will spend 8 week-ends in the winter counseling students at Snow Camp. But, my prayer is that you will open your eyes to opportunities to share the Gospel. All that we seek to do here at the Bible Institute is to create men and women who are credible in their Chrisitan faith. To live out, in creative ways, that which they hold to be truth from Gods Word. Know that as you move ahead in your life - that we here at the Bible Institute love you and count it a privilege to believe in you and see true Life Change that comes from changing your beliefs to be in conformity to the Word of God.

i kj The newest addition to the Bible Institut campus is the Charles Ryrie Library and Study Center. Through the generous support of financial donors and the services of many craftsmen, the library was completed. The dedication service was held on October 13, 2007. Administration, staff, alumni, students, and supporters of Word of Life gathered together to celebrate the opening of the Charles Ryrie Library. The night consisted of worship and a tribute to Dr. Ryrie's ministry, concluding with a dedication message from Dr. Charles Ryrie. and Dr. Ryrie's and Word of Life's continuance of it. The library also provides for the students an atomsphere that is more conducive for studying. With almost double the amount of volumes and over three times the size of the old library, the Ryrie Library is able to better meet the academic needs of the students. The new library also offers many more computer workstations and separate study rooms. With a view overlooking the campus and a comfortable work environment, the Charles Ryrie Library and Study Center will be enjoyed and greatly utilized by many classes to come.

Joe Jordan came to know Christ as Savior through the influence of a Christian businessman who sent him to camp at Word of Life Island in 1961. Joe responded to the Gospel under the preaching of Jack Wyrtzen and God changed the life of a troubled teenager into a young man with a burning desire to be used of God to reach others. Joe graduated in 1969 from Tennessee Temple University with a bachelor of arts degree in Bible and Theology. He studied at Philadelphia College of Bible and Lynchburg College. He also holds a Doctor of Divinity degree from Tennessee Temple. In 1969, Joe was accepted as a full-time missionary with Word of Life. Later that year he left for Argentina,

where for the next 20 years, he founded and directed the ministry of Word of Life. God blessed and expanded the work in Argentina to include a Bible Institute with some 560 students, camps in Buenos Aires and Pichi Traful and Clubs throughout the country. From Argentina, missionaries have been sent out to almost every Spanish speaking country in Central and South America as well as to Italy, Spain, Romania, Ukraine and Portugal. After serving five years as Senior Vice-President of Ministries, in 1995 Joe was appointed Director of Word of Life Fellowship International. In August of 1999, Joe was then appointed Executive Director of the worldwide ministries of Word of Life.

In 1992, he returned to Schroon Lake, New York to take the position of Assistant to the Director of Word of Life International Ministries. After assisting Paul Bubar for five years, he was appointed as the Vice President of the Word of Life International Ministries Division. He has ministered in over fifty countries, and in 2006, Don was given the added responsibility of Director of Word of Life Fellowship. Don is married to Darla and is the father of four children: Alyssa, Jonathan, Justin, and Ashlyn.

Don Lough accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on January 22, 1970. Ten years later, he dedicated his life to the Lord to be used for full-time ministry. / In 1984, he received his diploma from the Word of Life Bible Institute and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cedarville University in 1987. Don then went on to Dallas Theological Seminary to receive his Masters in Theology in 1992. While at Dallas, Don served as a Teaching Assistant for Drs. Howard Hendricks and Mark Bailey

0 / JH Every year in the history of Word of Life has been a great year to the glory of God. Through the years, Word of Life has never been a sensational work with immense growth in any one year but, rather, a steady work that has been built on the solid foundation of the Word of God. Many people asked "What is going to happen to Word of Life when Jack Wyrtzen goes to be with the Lord?" Our history gives evidence that this work has continued even after the home going of Jack Wyrtzen. Because it truly is of the Lord, Word of Life has continued to grow and expand under the leadership of George Theis and presently under Joe Jordan. There have been certain decades that were epic in the story and have given Word of Life the personality that it has today. These are the selected years that have helped bring Word of Life to this moment in time; however, under the present leadership, the dreams for the future of Word of Life are greater than the victories of the past.

Tucked away in Pottersville, New York at the base of Schroon Lake is the New York campus for the Word of Life Bible Institute. Surrounded by mountains, towering trees, and a placid lake, the campus provides a beauty that few other places in the world offer. It is almost impossible to go anywhere without admiring God's creation. A year at the Bible Institute in New York is a busy one. The campus hosts ministry activities, Word of Life events, as well as Snow Camp and Summer Ministries. Although

the schedule may allow for little free time, the constant submersion in ministry reaps rewards far beyond what could ever be imagined. The knowledge and wisdom gained throughout the year by sitting under the teaching of the resident professors, Dr. Davis and Dr. Wicks, serves not only as instructional but also as a godly example for your life. If you really apply all that you have heard and seen at the Word of Life Bible institute in New York it truly will be one of the best years of your life.

The theme for the year is to “Walk Worthy of Your Calling.” (Ephesians 4:1) The staff at the Bible Institute is our living example of how to do so. They lead by example, living out Biblical Principles in their own lives, praying that it will cement in our minds so that we can begin to live out scripture in the same way. This iswhat makes the staff unique.

Not only does the administration and staff take the time to show the students they care about them on a personal level, but the staff also has an interest in the student's spiritual lives. If a student is struggling academically or having problems at home, they know they can approach any staff member with questions and the staff will take the time to listen, offer advice, and pray with them. In return,

the staff may frequently stop the students and ask about their quiet time or what they have learned in classes, checking up on the students spiritual growth. As the students finish their time at WOLBI and go into different fields of life, one thing they will remember most is how the staff loved them and impacted their lives, influencing them as they grew closer to Christ.

I was born and raised in a Christian family and asked Jesus to come into my life at the age of eight. When I was 17,1 went forward at a Bible Conference dedicating my life to the Lord. As I grew up, my parents always housed visiting missionaries so I was exposed to people who lived in other countries. When I was in college, I had the opportunity to become friends with students from other countries and learn more about the world. I didn't know it at the time but the Lord was preparing me for my future ministry. I was always interested in teaching English as a foreign language and Word of Life Korea started a new ministry called School of Youth Ministries in English. My plans were to go to Korea for 3 months but the Lord had me stay for 3 1/2 years. When I returned to the States, I was asked to begin a ministry for the international students here at the Word of Life Bible Institute. It has been amazing to look back and see how He's prepared me to love and serve our students. -4 a

You want to be credible? You want to live a life that is worthy of your calling? You want to bear fruit? People will only believe you when you show them you love them. Honestly, genuinely, sincerely... love them. Check out 1John 4:7-21. I especially like verse 12, "Me one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us" People see God when we love! WOW! Whether that's speaking hard truth to them, giving them your time to show you care, or being gentle when they don't deserve it... it's all about love. Jesus Himself said it, loving God and loving people. If you want credibility spelled out for you, check out Romans 12:9-21. "Let love be without hypocrisy..!' That, is credibility. - Michelle Hartsell

For some it was their first time away from home, first time at college, first time living with roommates; while others have been through the college process before. But for all the first year students, they were in for an adventure that they could have never dreamed of having. From jumping right into classes and weekend ■ ministries fall quarter to walking across the stage at graduation, not one student is able to leave

the Bible Institute without seeing some change in his life. The cirriculum of the first year program is designed to lay a Biblical foundation in every student's life. With year long classes such as Bible Survey and Theology, as well as guest lecturers typically teaching a specific book of the Bible, a knowl edge of the Word of God is engrafted into the thinking of each student. Learning to balance classes, homework, and service assignments can be a tedious

process. Being pushed far beyond your comfort zone on ministry is a stretching experience. Living with roommates can be exciting and trying and frustrating. But, at the end of the year, the work and effort invested by each student will be rewarded. The principle of life change becomes evident in more than just the gaining of a greater knowledge of God's Word. Left: Bethany Archer; Sierra Fields; Rachel Boddie; Andrew Gombossy. Coming to the Bible Insitute is something that my husband and I have dreamed about for at least five years. We didn't think it would be possible for at least five more years, but last January God said, "Now" We prayed diligently and discussed it thoroughly. We were scared, but we obeyed. Being an off campus married student has both amazing privileges and challenges. I have had to work diligently to make sure my focus is remaining on Christ. It is very easy to be so busy and forget who I'm serving. It seems for every challenge we face, God blesses and provides abundantly. We have had the privilege of developing relationships as we've gotten to know some of the students. If you're paying attention you will see God doing awesome things all around through all kinds of people. We are so grateful to have this opportunity to be in God's Word receiving incredible teaching from incredible teachers. We thank God for this privilege. We are confident we are exacty where God has brought us.

We've defined credibility as walking worthy of the calling with which yon were called. But when I think about it, who is really truly worthy of God and His calling? There is nothing we can do to earn credit in God's kingdom, since it's only by His grace we are saved, only by Him are we justified. Credibility can only be the life we live in gratitude to our Saviour for His wonderful gift of life. Credibility is daily taking up our cross and following God in His commands. He has given us through the holy Word of God, faithfully honouring Him in everything we do. Credibility is, upon entering the presence of our almighty Father, hearingHim say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" -L^ifeen

WOLBI: A solid rock foundation that doubles as a trampoline. As this year has progressed, the Word of Life Bible Institute has continually been building in my life a stronger and stronger foundation upon my Savior Jesus Christ. The key to that foundation is what I like to describe to non-WOLBI§ as Bible Study on steroids. A foundation so good, it doesn’t just sit there under me. It springs me up and out to use what I have learned to change lives, kind of like a trampoline. And after all, who but insurance companies doesn’t like trampolines? - Cl^\rt3 Lov\ _______ ____________________ 0

Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each es teem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name ofJesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. ork ealing with specific types of ministry and current issues facing Christianity, the instruction received this year lays the primary steps for beginning a life of ministry. Combining a busy class schedule with ministry leaves little free time. But a year of training, receiving (and possibly giving) discipleship, growing, and forming and strengthening friendships is an eternal investment that most students will never forget.

while the Florida students are adapting to an entirely new campus (and the cold)! But for all the second year students, this year has been an adventure that they will never forget. Building on the Biblical fundamentals taught in first year, the emphasis of the second year program is developing a ministry foundation. The focus ofthe classes is putting into practice the principles that have already been taught. From the infamous Bible Study Methods and Homoletics or Public Speaking to classes

A shift happens in the transition from first year into second year. There is a different atmosphere in the classroom that was noticeable the very first day in class, and it had more to do with the change from the Jack Wvrtzen Center to W Council Hall. One significant change for the second year class is the mixing ofNew York and Florida students. For the original New York students, it is an adjustment to seeing new faces in the classroom;

"Behold, how aood and how it is for breathren to dwell together in c W a /! Psalm 133:1

Lord had other plans. He is ’not willing that any should perish, but all should come to repentance!’ (2 Peter 3:9) I am grateful that my Lord was not willing that I perish but had a plan to save me from my sins. He desired my life, my heart, and my all. He sent a woman after His own heart, my grandmother, whose only desire was to please' Him. She presented the Gospel to me when I was twelve years old. It was then that I trusted the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior, being my only way to heaven. “For by grace (I have) been saved through faith!’ (Eph.2: 8-9) Since then, God has brought me to Word of Life Bible Institute and is continually preparing my heart, mind, and soul for His service. He is leading me to attend the Word of Life Bible Institute in Argentina for further training. This will prepare me for full time ministry on the mission field of Managua, Nicaragua.

My name is Sebastian J. Murillo. I come from a family of five (four sisters!). I was born in Managua, Nicaragua into a society that did not know Christ. Wars were breaking out all around us, with people fighting to see who will be in power. Murders and things of this sort where happening at the time that I lived there. We children still attended church with my mom even though there would be a man with a machine gun in his hands around every corner. I have been attending a Baptist church since I was born. I have attended churches in Nicaragua, Florida, North Carolina, and New York. Now I am twenty- five and attend Word of Life Bible Institute in Schroon Lake, New York. Preparing my life for the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Before I was saved, I was walking in the flesh, Galatians 5:19-21. These things separated me from God. I was dead in my trespasses and only deserved death, but the

January students get a unique perspective of the Bible Institute. Not only are they new among a campus of students who have already spent a quarter together, they also start at the beginning of Snow Camp. For most of them, this is their first impression of Word of Life. Once they begin to become acquainted with the campus, life starts to settle down, but just a little bit! These students fit right in and make friends quickly with their roommates and classmates. Soon, you can hardly tell the difference between the January students and those who have been there since September. Class often presents a challenge to January students; jumping into Theology,

which builds on the fundamentals taught in the fall quarter, can prove to be difficult, and starting Bible Survey in the middle of the Old Testament can be quite interesting. However, with the help of classmates, the January students are able to successfully make it through the year. / Often January students are placed in their own separate category. But, in reality, they strongly contribute to the unity found on the campus. Although they encounter some challenges starting their education at the Bible Institute in the winter quarter, the January students are able to press on through them to finish the year with excellence.

new faces, new friendships. january I39

Every year the Word of Life Bible Institute becomes home for students from all over the world. Each inhabitable continent is represented in this year's classes with students from approximately fifteen different countries. You can rarely go anywhere on campus without running into someone from a different culture. Adjusting to life in a dorm can be an interesting experience for both the international student and their American roommates! From overcoming language barriers to tasting foreign delicacies, friendships are formed that no ocean can ever m iff alltne

natia separate. Interacting together in the classroom, at meals, and in the dorm provides great opportunities to learn from one another. For many of the international students, studying in a language other than their own can become difficult. But, because of the help received from many of the other students, they are able to learn God's Word in a way that most never dreamed possible. After spending one or two years at the Bible Institute, almost all of the international students return to their home countries with a great burden and passion to share the Gospel with their people.

share the same meals, (housing, or activities. With all the added responsibilities of being an - off campus student, finding a balance can be quite difficult. However, one common thing we all share is an awesome God. In the same amazing way that He brought us together to serve Him, He also provides the necessities that off campus students need to support them through the year. This brings new meaning to the phrase, "God does not call the equipped, He equips the called"

Every student who finds themself at the BI has had to make some kind of sacrifice. For off campus students, these sacrifices can often be a little more demanding. Off campus students change their lives drastically by moving away from home and leaving jobs while they learn to adapt to classes and studies all over again. They must keep up with homework, papers, and mega-quizzes, while being parents, running a home, and managing finances. Connecting with on campus students is also a challenge since they do not

The staff at the Bible Institute really become like parents away from home. Their j honest, caring attitude encourages students to come to them with any questions, and they don't mind addressing any/ issue. The staffs commitment to Gods Word is evident in the way they live their lives, as they do their best to disciple the students and set an example for them. They really do pour their lives into the students.

On the Florida campus, Dr. Charles Scheide and Mr. Gary Ingersoll are the ‘resident* lecturers. Both have unique ways of teaching; Dr. Scheide with his numerous sources of information and humble attitude, and Mr. Ingersoll with ‘commercial breaks' spread sporadically throughout the class. The Yice President of Florida Ministries, Mr. Tom Phillips, really sets the mood with his unique look at life. Being a kid “stuck in a grown-up's body,’ as he says it, there is never

a dull moment when he is around. Deans Becca Robinson and Jonathan Lindstam are personally involved in the students' lives and their love for Christ induces a similar love in each student. They both give wonderful examples of how to conduct a well- balanced Christian life while serving full-time. These and all the rest of the staff at the Florida extension encourage students to “Know, Grow, and Sho\$ the love ofJesus Christ.

If there were ever a class devoted strongly to winning souls for Christ, the Florida class of 2008 is it. From day one, friendships were made that could never be broken, and as soon as they started delving into Gods word, they couldn’t help but share it with everyone they met. They all work together as a team for a common goal, fulfilling the Great Commission and preaching the Word of Truth. Ministry teams

unified in their task of bringing glory to God.

take trips everywhere, including the state fair to work with Child Evangelism Fellowship where all they did was tell the “story of the Wordless Book' and hundreds of people came to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Specialized teams such as the Praise Team, the Ensemble, and the Drama Team get the chance to minister using their artistic talents for the Lord and each member of each team has gained a special bond with one another, making them

The biggest testament to the class’s commitment to Christ is their excitement as they look forward to ministering to campers from all over. “What I looked forward to the most about camp was the campers God would put in my life and how I would be able to be an influence in their lives’, said Alicia Wulf. Across the campus, the answers would be the same. God worked His will through the Class of 2008.
