One of the unique aspects of the Word of Life Bible Institute is the strong emphasis on discipleship. It is one of the first things suggested at the beginning of the year for students to be involved in. And many take advantage of the discipleship program. The word discipleship may be a confusing one to some, at first. Normally, we just think back to the disciples of Jesus. But what were they? They were learners and followers of Jesus. He taught them and patterned a life for them, and ultimately us, to mimic. Mr. Garland often states that discipleship is “teaching others to be what you already are!’ It is having a “Paul” in your life; someone you can learn from and watch. A discipler is saying, as Paul did in I Corinthians 11:1, “Be ye followers of me, even as I am of Christ!’ If a student desires to be discipled, they simply have to ask. The Deans’ Department
then goes through the process of selecting a personal discipler for the student. A specific discipler is chosen who can best meet the spiritual, mental, and emotional needs of that particular student. Most often, the discipler is on the Bible Institute or Word of Life staff. The process of discipleship is just that, a process dedicated to growth. Throughout the year, a discipler will meet with the student at least once a week for an intense meeting. Discipleship requires total commitment from both the student and the discipler. During a meeting, a discipler will dig into your life asking probing questions while encouraging you to grow spiritually. Ask anyone on the Bible Institute staff, and they will tell you that they have a heart for discipleship, because they are also receiving it in their own lives. One day, they would like to see every single student being discipled.
