The Season of Giving Back
This fall, we’ve been fortunate enough to participate in and sponsor many great local events. Some have already passed, but there are a few yet to come. In this season of giving back, I wanted to share a few of these events. Back in September, we had a great time at the La Conquista Reunion Show. La Conquista was a prominent all-girl cumbia group from Monterrey, Mexico — though most of the members now live locally. What made this event truly special is the fact that this was a “one-time-only” reunion. In the mid-2000s, they were huge and also earned well-deserved Grammy nominations. It was great to see the group perform once more. Moving into October, we sponsored the Texas Creator Summit, which was held at The Bay Jewel in Corpus Christi. This was the first year of the Texas Creator Summit, and it attracted entrepreneurs and creators of all kinds. It worked as a networking event mixed with informational talks as a way to bring local entrepreneurs together. Hopefully, they’ll bring it back next year with even more speakers and resources. You can learn more about the Texas Creator Summit at TXCreatorSummit.com . This month, we’ll be participating in Coffee Waves’ Small Business Weekends and Canned Food Drive. This event is running through the month of November. It’s a mix of supporting local businesses and giving back to the community. We’re no stranger to canned food drives, so you can be sure we’ll be participating! As always, we encourage our team and everyone who can to give back. Food is always in need, and every can of food does help. It’s also a great way to highlight Small Business Saturday, which takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Small Business Saturday brings attention to local
businesses that can often get lost in the rush of Black Friday, which is usually dominated by the big-box stores. Of course, when you can mix shopping with giving back to the community, it’s a win-win. You support local businesses while benefiting local food banks. Through November and into December, we’re also joining forces with the Toys for Tots Toy Drive. This year, we’re working with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association. The goal is to help collect toys for kids in military families. As many of you know, Corpus Christi is home to many military families that come from all walks of life. We want to ensure every family and every child has a gift to open this Christmas. Pump the Brakes on These 3 Bad Driving Habits
Honking It seems that most cars these days come with the most shrill-sounding horn possible. Most drivers don’t ever use their horns, but there are those who tend to use their horns in every possible situation, telling the world, “Here I am!” Whether they are in traffic, waiting at a light, or simply expressing their road rage, people use their horn as an expression of how they are feeling as opposed to using it for what it’s actually for. Using your horn for unnecessary situations causes some people to panic and others to become angry. Don’t be the cause of another road rage news article; use your horn only when it’s really needed. Burnished Potato Nuggets
There are countless ways to prepare potatoes, but not all are created equal. For irresistibly crunchy outsides and deliciously creamy insides, try this recipe. The result is sure to be the star side at your Thanksgiving table.
INGREDIENTS

5 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch pieces

1/4 cup vegetable oil 8 cloves garlic, crushed 2 sprigs rosemary Kosher salt, to taste

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 425 F. 2. In a large pot, pour water over potatoes to cover by 2 inches. Salt water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 10 minutes. 3. Thoroughly drain potatoes and let stand for 10 minutes. Toss gently and season with salt.
4. Meanwhile, combine both oils in a large pan and heat in oven for 10 minutes. 5. Remove pan from oven and add potatoes, turning to coat thoroughly. Return to oven and cook for 30 minutes, turning every 10. 6. Toss in garlic and rosemary and finish cooking for 8–10 minutes. 7. Drain and serve.

The Greatest American War Horse The Legend of Sergeant Reckless
Animals have acted as companions to humankind for thousands of years. They’re a near-constant source of companionship, comfort, and aid. Unfortunately, military animals don’t often get the recognition they deserve. One horse, in particular, was essential to the success of her regiment during the Korean War. Meet Sergeant Reckless. Bought for $250 in 1952 by a U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant at a Seoul racetrack, Sergeant Reckless was

She bonded so deeply with them that Reckless would go anywhere and do anything to help her adopted family.” Sergeant Reckless’ greatest achievement occurred during the final stages of the Battle for Outpost Vegas. During the bloody five-day campaign, Reckless made 51 trips to resupply guns over the course of a single day. By the end of the battle, she had carried 386 rounds of ammunition by walking 35 miles through rice paddies and mountain trails. After dropping off the ammunition, Reckless would then bring wounded soldiers back to safety. Reckless was trained to lie down when under fire and avoid barbed wire, and her ability to do so without needing human command saved many lives during the battle. Reckless would close out her war career with two Purple Hearts and the rank of staff sergeant. She spent the rest of her years at Camp Pendleton in California.
