led to an increase in particularised distrust in the US president and as such lead

to Americans utilising conventional forms of political participation in order to

voice their complaints. Crucially, higher levels of particularised distrust in Nixon

did not cause citizens to lose trust in institutional mechanisms and engage in

non-institutional or illegal participation.
