United Kingdom and United States. However, we believe that our hypothesis is
applicable to any western democratic state.
The report also suggests that the higher the group solidarity and affiliation
around an issue, the more extreme participation tends to be, in situations of low
institutional trust. However, more research should be conducted on how these
elements impact political participation directly through exploring more case
studies. Overall, we suggest conducting more research to develop or clarify the
above issues. To conclude, the central focus of our report was to determine the
relationship between trust in political institutions and political participation.
Through our case studies we have proved our hypothesis that a lack of trust in
political institutions results in more unconventional participation.
