more inopportune times, such as during classes and were often embarrassed when a guest lecturer chose to use them as an “example.” But for the most part the stu­ dent body remained awake and alert so as not to miss one word of the precious lessons to be learned. Even if it did take some artificial stimu­ lants — CAFFEINE! Renata DeAlmeida summed it up by saying, “Sleep? You must be dreaming!!”

When asked about the con­ cept of sleep this was the typ­ ical response from the stu­ dents at W.O.L. this year. Sleep was a rarity but each precious moment stolen was enough to keep one going ’til “lights out.” The winter quarter was by far the most exhausting physically, men­ tally, emotionally, and spir­ itually.
