The Ripple Effect - AY2023 Rutgers CPHWD Impact Report

Center for Public Health Workforce Development

FEBRUARY

Each February, Center Director, Mitchel Rosen, visits Capitol Hill to advocate for worker health and safety. This year, with the assistance from Rutgers Federal Programs Staff, he met with the Legislative staff of NJ Senators and Representatives to discuss their support for additional funding to protect workers. Center Director, Mitchel Rosen, joined colleagues in the US Virgin Islands with expertise in pesticide safety, integrated pest management, and worker protection to foster an exchange of resources and strategies to support farmers and workers in St. Croix, USVI. Colleagues from Puerto Rico, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Michigan visited farms across St. Croix to experience their pest management and work practices. In partnership with the NJ Department of Health’s Infectious & Zoonotic Disease Program, the Center hosted a two-day pro- fessional meeting for public health professionals from areas with high rates of Lyme disease. More than 35 in-person and virtual attendees participated, learning from peers in other sta- te health departments as well as from leaders at the CDC . Center Director, Mitchel Rosen, served as guest speaker at the Greater Mercer Public Health Partnership Spring Meeting in Hamilton, New Jersey. He presented on current workforce trends, the ways work impacts health, how workers can increase job satisfaction, and what really matters to employees. Center staff members, Kendra Julien, Laura Warne, and Megan Rockafellow-Baldoni represented the Center at the 2023 Rutgers School of Public Health Job Fair. They attended to remind students that the Center is a valuable place for continuing education after graduation and throughout their public health careers. Center faculty, staff, and instructors attended the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Spring Meeting and National Trainers’ Exchange in Indianapolis, Indiana. Entitled “Emerging Workplace Hazards: Creating Adaptable and Innovative Safety and Health Training.” The National Trainers’ Exchange brought together over 300 participants exchanging ideas about how to make training more effective and empowering. Center faculty, staff, instructors, and colleagues from across Rutgers came together to celebrate the Retirement of Office Manager, Cherie Ferguson. Cherie was an integral part of Center operations for over 25 years, so her retirement was a bittersweet occasion for all. Her smile, warmth, and dedication to helping others are missed greatly, but we wish her all the best in this next chapter!
