The Holy Spirit is in the: world today to tell of the Son of God who died on the cross in order that all who want to might be saved and lifted. 4 :1 4 2 but they did not ask her what she sought, nor ask Him why He talked with her (v./27). She was seeking eternal life, and He was seeking to bestow that life. The marks of conversion are seen in the woman’s actions. She left the waterpot—the symbol of her ordinary d a i l y pursuits—in forgetfulness of that for which she had come (v. 28). She spoke to the men of the town with fearlessness (vs. 28, 29), and her ques tion to them was actually a confession that Jesus was the Christ (v. 29). She manifested her faith and revealed the joy of her heart by her testimony. The water of life was already flowing through her, and the effect Was that the men of the town sought'Christ;' they “ came unto him” (v. 30). II. T h e I n s t r u c t io n o f t h e D isciples (31*38) The disciple^ were instructed by the Lord’s example (vs. 31-34). Astonished that the One whqm they had left tired and hungry should now appear refreshed, they asked whether any one had brought Him food. He replied, “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me.” His soul had desired refresh ment more than His body, and He found the refreshment in doing the will of God. That will involved His offering of the water of life to every one, and the visit of the woman had provided an opportunity. The disciples were instructed also by His exhortation (vs. 35-38). As He Himself found refreshment and reward in the will of God, they likewise would find the same as they engaged in the work He would set before them. They had but to look on the fields ready

The “ look” was to be through His ,eyes, to see as He saw, and to behold something deeper than the physical, social, or mental ne,ed of the people. And if they allowed what they saw to move them as He was moved, they would be readers gather ing the fruit unto eternal life, and re ceiving “wages” f°r all they gathered, The same course of action must be fol lowed by the Lord’s true followers today. The great tragedy of the pres ent day is that believers in Christ are so often only mildly concerned with the will of God as it relates to perish ing souls. HI. T h e C o n v e r sio n o f t h e ' S a m a r it a n s - (3 9 4 2 ) Many believed sufficiently in the woman’s testimony to cause them to go out to see the One who had done such great things for her. When they met Him, they besought Him to tarry with them (vs. 39, 40), As He tarried, He opened to them the truth He had come to speak, the truth that He Him self was sent from God for their sal vation. Then they testified that they now believed, not alone because of the woman’s ,word, but, they said, “We have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Sav iour of the world” (v. 42). Note that they said “the” Saviour, not “ a” Sav iour, as though there were others, (such as Buddha, or Mohammed, or Plato) who could save. He is the Sav iour because there is, and can be, no one else to save men from their sins. Thé simplicity of this record sug gests that perhaps we, today, are too technical in our presentation of the Saviour to those who need Him. Let us learn that the manifestation of the life which He bestows by faith, and the simple pointing to Him as the One who bestows that life, will be more potent in winning souls than will all the arguments, however logical, and all the discussions, however learned, in which we might indulge. Points and Problem s L "And upon this came his dis ciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman" (John 4:27). In the American Revision there is no definite article before “woman.” ' And in the Greek it does not appear. The reason the disciples marveled was that He talked with “a woman.” Why was this ’

John 4:27 And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her? 28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into city, and saith to the men, 29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? i; . 30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. 31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him aught to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and ¿to finish his work. 35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields) for they are white al ready to harvest. * 36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. 37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. 38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labor: other men labored, and ye are entered into their labors. 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman,- which testified, He told pie all that ever I did. 40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his own ¿word: 42 And said unto the .woman,-Wow ne believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the.Christ, the Saviour of the world.
