1. White Earth “Hast thou entered into the treas ures of the snow?” (Job 38:22). The earth is white with drifts of snow! - Giant hills, housetops, and every tree And weed, and shrub in clean snow dress . Glisten with winter mystery. The earth is w h i t e with feathery drifts! Gnarled limbs, long r o u g h with wound and Scar, Gleam white—made p u r e by Him who'sends • His tender love where deep wóunds are. —Lavelle Maddox. 2. The- Uplifting Outlook . “Those things w h i c h are before” (Phil,-3:43). Not looking backward, not looking around, but looking up . . . This up lifting outlook comes, not from the freedom of the mountains, but from a Boman prison where the apostle, a chained captive, waited the uncer tain end. Much tried as to his sur roundings, he pens an epistle the pervading note of which is joy. It is written to > the Church at Philippi, founded through his sufferings in an other prison, the dark dungeons of w h i c h resounded to his songs of praise! Oh, lover of Christ, tell us thy triumphant secret! We, too, would sing to His praise through whatever darkness lies ahead. —Mrs. Howard Taylor. 3. . First Place “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which, arg above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Col. 3:1X The rule that governs my' life is this: Anything that dims my vision of Christ, or takes away my taste for Bible study, or cramps my prayer life, or -makes Christian work difficult, is wrong for me, and I must, as a Chris tian, turn away from it. This simple rule may help you find a safe road for your feet along life’s road. —J. Wilbur Chapmgn. 4. The Greatness of God “The' exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe” (Eph. 1:19). As the marsh hen secretly builds on the watery sod,

Behold I will build me a nest on the greatness of God; I will fly in the greatness of, God as’ the marsh hen flies In the freedom that fills all the space ’twixt the m a r s h and the skies; By so many roots as the marsh grass sends in the sod, I will heartily lay me a hold on the greatness of God. ' —Sidney Lanier. 5. The Practice of His Presence “Wait on the Lord: be oi good cour age, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord” (Psa. 27:14). How often this is said in the Bible, and how little understood! It is whàt the, old monk calls “the practice of the presence of God.” It is the habit of prayer. It is the continued commun ion that not only asks but also re ceives, . . /W e must live in thè at mosphere of His presence till we ab sorb His life. This is the secret of spir itual depth and rest, of power and fullness of love and prayer, of hope and holy usefulness.—A. B. Simpson. 6. Our Highest Service “Early will I seek thee” (Psa. 63:1). There is ho time so profitably spent as the early hour given to’ Jesus only. Do we give sufficient attention to this hour? If possible, it should be re deemed; nothing can make up for it. Activity may lead to zeal in service,, to the neglect of personal commun ion, but such neglect will not only lessen the value of the service, but tend to incapacitate us for the highest service.—J. Hudson Taylor. 7. Giving “And the grace of our Lord was ex ceeding abundant” (1 Tim. 1:14). God might have used His sunset gold so sparingly, He might have doled His blossoms out quite grudgingly, He might have put but one wee star in all the sky. But since He gave so lavishly, Why should not l!—Selected. 8. Opened Windows “He that dwelleth in the s e c r e t place of the MOST HIGH shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psa. 91:1). Often God has to close the door of service in order that we may appre ciate the value of an open window. Service dominates our time', leaving
