Now more than ever the Giit of Gifts—the

little opportunity for prayer, fellow ship, adoration, and personal worship. Then illness or accident c o m e our way and the door leading out to the world is closed. . . . The window is opened and we find ourselves revital ized by the balmy air from heaven. Has your door closed? Live at the window, so that when the door opens again, you will be able to take into your vocation the glory of your vision. —Herbert Lqckyer. 9. Prayer with an Aim “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heayen gave rain” (Jas. 5:17, 18). Elijah had a definite object in view when he prayed. His whole being was bent on ^curing rain . , . We might as well post a letter without addressing the envelope and expect it to reach its destination, as to pray without any definite aim and expect an answer. Such prayer becomes a burden and a weariness to the spirit. . . . Elijah prayed definitely and then expected an answer to his prayer . . . Is it not a wonder that we so often are surprised at the fidelity of God? —Frederic W. Farr. 10. Creative Forgiveness “Create in me a clean heart, O God” (Psa. 51:10). “Therefore if any man he in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Cor. 5:17). “Create”—not just wash up, or patch up what I already have. . . . Christ truly “cleanses” those whom He has made “new,” but that cleansing is a miracle as great as the creation of worlds. What but creative power could take a guilty heart and m a k e it guiltless—not merely pro nounce it forgiven, but actually made guiltless, as though it had never sinned? Each time God forgives, even when He forgives those who have long been His saints, God calls into action His creative power.—R. Y. B. 11. Strength in Stillness “Their strength is to sit still” (Isa. 30:7). Never act in a panic nor allow man to dictate to thee; calm thyself and be still; force thyself into the quiet of thy closet until the pulse beats nor mally and the scare has ceased to dis turb. When thou art.most eager to act is the time when thou wilt make the most pitiable mistakes. Do not sav in thine heart what thou wilt or wilt n^* do; but wait upon God until He makes known His way. —F. B. Meyer.

12. Purpose in the Storm “The Lord h a t h his way in the whirlwind and in the storm” (Nahum 1:3). . Often in the storm we have ears only for its fury—and fail to hear the footsteps of Jehovah. The sunshine has failed to a r r e s t our attention, labor has crowded out the. time for p r a y e r , and in burning tears in a howling storm, we are arrested. The storm makes the mariner think of A pilot, and the h a r b o r . The storm makes earth recede and heaven a liv ing reality. The knife of the master surgeon cuts deep, but it is to heal. —Leonard Harris. 13 . The Son of Man “In the midst of the seven candle sticks one like unto the Son of man” (Rev. 1:13). The one seen amidst the candle sticks was not “like unto the Son of God,” so often thought of as far re moved from man’s environment, but “like unto the Son of man,” One who had moved among men, tasting the various phases of earth’s unpleasant circumstances. Sorrow, testing, temp tation, poverty, loneliness, betrayal, denial, and a general misunderstand ing f r o m the multitudes, had all helped to make earth’s cup full for Him. Who would be better fitted to walk among the seven candlesticks, typical of the entire church with its varied personalities, than such an One?—Pameii. 14. The Battle of Life “But thanks be to God, which giv- eth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Cor. 15:57). The battle with sin in the realm of the spirit is the most terrible of all. In no battle are there so many cowards, so many who run away into the funk hole of self-righteousness. And yet there is no place where we can be more certain that God is with us in
