to him, but more than anything, it was his heart for the Lord. He always was a straight-shooter and I knew that what he said, he meant, and he was a man of the Word. He was the first person I dated that wasn’t six feet tall, but that was because I realized that God doesn’t measure a man by the length of his legs, but by what’s in his heart. There was a lot in his heart, and there still is. Paul was born in Blaine, Maine. He was the baby in a family of five boys and one girl. All of his brothers at one point were in ministry. His dad was a chiropractor, and his mom was a homemaker. He and George Theis, and a man named Jay Robertson were the first three men in Bible Clubs. They really formed what Bible Clubs should be like. Paul helped with the legistics of it, the “how-to do’’ things. He is very good at that kind of thing. Then Paul got involved in the Overseas Department. He was making trips to Germany and had an opportunity to go into Hungary in 1984 for the first time. He had some wonderful ministries in Hungary before the Iron Curtain fell. When the man who was heading up Overseas was no longer able to do so, it was natural for Paul to step into that position. He did Overseas for about 11 years. It was a very different and exciting part of his time with WOL. Overseas then became more of a service to the mis sionaries, and grew under Paul’s direction. Recently Paul had come upon the magic of retirement, and when Don and Carol Lough decided to leave the Inn and go to Oklahoma, Joe Jordan talked to Paul and said, “We really would like you to step in there.’’ So, we re there now! I had been working in a hotel to help put the kids through school, so I had a lot of neat training that I could bring to this job. Isn’t it neat how God orchestrates our lives! He is wonderful at team-builing, great with relationships, and has wonderful history with WOL. People come along and we recoginze them, and they don't feel like it’s somebody strange at the Inn, which is really neat. How long we’ll be there, we really don't know. We’re enjoying it so far! So far, so good!! I love being where the Lord wants us to be. Every day is different, there are not two days that are alike. How did the ministry affect our family? When you are in a ministry it affects everything. Our ministry' ran our lives. For our kids, Paul was gone a great deal of the time. But I always thought there were so many wonderful things about being in the ministry for our kids that I never thought they they were deprived, and I don’t think they ever felt that way either. For instance, we lived on the Island 28 summers! Our kids thought they were Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer! They would go with their dad to evangelistic rallies and round-ups for Clubs and when he would go overseas he would bring them home things. In our daughter Sarah’s room, there's a whole shelf full of dolls; a doll from every foreign field that he went to. There were just wonderful privilages that our children had. Just in the last two years, having gone through the situation of losing our son Dan, we have both changed because we see life on a more eternal perspective. We realize how very fragile this world is. We have learned to trust the Lord with a freshness. I think Paul’s a better speaker. I think he’s got a different kind of a heart, and a better understanding of how important it is for young people to live life well. It’s taught us to grab the day and live it to the fullest. Shiileip ctf)uAcw The 1998 edition of the “The Open Door" is dedicated to Paid Bubar, a faithful man of God who's life is an example of god liness to us all.

came to Word of Life in die summer of I960. Paul had joined staff in the fall of 1959. I960 was his first summer, as ic was mine. We got ro know each other while working on the Island. We had one date that summer. When I came back for my second summer, Paul had been busy

chat year beginning the Club ministry, and was trying to get that off and going. Iliac second summer we had two dates. It w'as a real roaring romance! After the second summer, WOL had asked if I would stay on as one of Jack's secretaries, which I did. Through that year, we got to know each other better. I liked Paul before I loved him, and that's a neat thing. In June of 1962, Paul asked me to marry him, I said yes, and we were married on March 30, 1963- I came from a very ordinary back ground, and Paul came from a family of ministers of the Gospel. The whole prospect of ministry was a really different thing, and I knew when I married Paul that that was what we were doing; it was not a surprise. When Paul and I were married, I knew that I was doing what God wanted me to do, and that’s a very important thing as a young person. It wasn’t like Hollywood, but I knew that this was what I should do. We had David a year and

a half after we were married, then Dan two years later. It was really hard for me to adjust to the ministry. I struggled with Paul being gone, and there was a lot of baggage there. I would always reflect back on the fact that 1knew on the day that I married Paul that I was suppose to marry him. That helped me through some of those hard times. He doesn't remember those hard times, but I asked the Lord to never let me forget them because I didn’t ever want to repeat it, and I wanted the Lord to be able to use it. Paul is a very' interesting person. If I were going to characterize his life, the first thing I would say would probably be that his funny. He has this wild sense of humor; I think that “zany” is the word! He always said that 1 would laugh at his jokes no matter how many cimes he would tell them. But what he didn’t realize is that 1 wasn't just laughing at the dumb jokes, but 1 was laughing at what jokes he chose to tell, who he chose to tell them to, and how he chose to turn them around! He would tell the same joke in three or four different ways depending on the person he was telling it to, and that was as much fun as anything! He has always been a very7 funny man and life has never been boring with Paul. That’s probably one of the first things that attracted me

Paul, you started me in full-time ministry: then you trusted, tutored , tailored me and for thirty-three years of your life have continuously demonstrated Christ's words in Mk. 8:35: '' Whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it. * ‘ Thank you . “ Waynesville" Lewis.

S Some of us have known for years and others of us little imagined that we would be at Word of Life Bible Institute a year ago. But, either way, here we are. The Luke 5 story seems to describe our situation in the NY campus at WOL- BI: so many fish (students) came in that the boat (WOLBI campus) could scarcely hold them! Knowing that God is in control of everything, howev er, means believing that He indeed guided us here. It also means every thing that happens this year is part of His plan, right down to our roomates and job assignments. And Luke 5 also tells us that sometimes Jesus guides us to launch out into the deep water (v.4). As Wendell Calder noted, our rela tionship to God is indicated by our relationships with others. The work that God does in us is not something that just occurs in the classroom. What we learn there is tested and applied in student life, revealing what we really know and believe about God. Eccle siastes 5:20 says he “will not often consider the years of his life, beause God keeps him occupied with the glad ness of his heart.’’ We have certainly been occupied here! Though stretched by a demanding schedule, it is for dis cipline and preparation. We have had so many good things to enjoy here: Christian friendships from all over the world, jogs by the lake, dorm devotions, snowball fights, excur sions to coffee shops, Wal-Mart, the mall, and of course the Family Deli. What a wonderful year! We get to put in action what we learn every day by applying God’s word to life, work, and relationships.

Wednesday----Presidential Chapel Thursday-------Snow Camp or Ministry Chapel Friday----------Split Chapel

Chapel is a refreshing time. Hearts are encouraged through song and testimony of what the Lord is doing in lives of students. In chapel, the word of God becomes a mirror reflecting our attitudes. James reminds us that “if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer,” he is like a man who looks in a mirror, sees something that needs to change, and then walks away, forgetting all about it. Chapel at WOLBI is a time for this kind of self examination so that as James says, we will be blessed in what we do (1:25).

he 1998 class at Word o Life Bible Institute was ; very unique one. There weri over 700 students combinec

at the New York campus and Florid; extension. For some, it was their seconc year. For most, though, it was their firs year. Young people from all over tht U.S. and several different countries came to Word Of Life with the sam< purpose in mind. Whether the student had been saved for most of their lives 01 i were recently saved, they desired to grow more like Jesus, learn more about His word, and become the fishers oi men God wants them to be. As the year went by, lots of new friendships were made, and the mem ories, both good and bad, will never be forgotten; but most of all, everything God has taught them will always be pondered in their hearts. From the first day of school to the special banquets, to ministries and work assignments, tc snow camp and all the summer min istries, and of course Graduation day this year has been a memorable one. Fo most, this may even be the most im portant year of schooling which give: them a greater reason to really treasun this year. Some will come back for second year while others will go on tc work or further their education. Bu whatever path the Lord chooses for eacl student, they will take what they have learned at Word of Life with them always, and hopefully continue learning and teaching God's word, the goal ol reeling in people for the Lord... even il the nets do break.

Tirst y e a r Receiving the Call

There is a first for everything. For most of the students attending the Bible Institute, it was their first year studying God’s Word in depth. At the Bible Institute, there were over 500 students, most of which were coming right out of high school, making it a tremendously challenging year indeed! No longer dependent on anyone else, they ventured out on their own with mixed feelings of excitement and nervousness that come with the thought of that “first day.” They left the comfort of their own homes, friends, and family to live with people they had never met before, and to learn things that they couldn’t even imagine. Now they must push out into the sea and cast their nets for the unsaved. Though the challenge was great, God’s grace was sufficient.

This year, for the first time ever, the Word of Life staff volunteered their time to work a dinner to give the students a rest. The staff took control of everything! They worked food prep, dish pit, line, and floors as well! The students that normally worked that shift were appreciative for the night off. Not only did these students enjoy some free time, but the entire student body was able to witness a true servant’s attitude of the staff that is sometimes so easy to overlook.

It seems as though every year the Word of Life Bible Institute attracts more and more international students than the year before. With over 40 international students, our school gets a taste for cultures from around the world! But, did you ever wonder how these students heard about Word of Life? Most come from countries that Word of Life has established itself, either with camps or Bible Institutes. But why travel so far? All want to pour themselves more into God’s word. Many then are called to go back to their home countries and teach others about God. Many of them also come to America with plans of learning more about another culture, and language. Much credit must be given to them because for some they come not knowing a single word of English, yet leave speaking it fluently! Leaving their families so far behind proves hard for most, but they soon realize that they have an even bigger family here. They learn much from us, but in return we learn much from them. The bonds we make no ocean or continent could break.

With 15 students and several different instruments, this year's Pep Band livened up the student body with great sound and enthusiasm. This dynamic group played their hearts out at soccer games, basketball games, Snow Camp and even summer camp! Nothing was able to excite the crowd more than the beat of the base and the shrill of the wind instruments. In an auditorium full of screaming teenagers, the band was at its best. Getting the crowd involved was their specialty, and producing a unified sound was their forte. But with all of the emotions and hooraying, it was evident that their number one fan was the Lord Jesus Christ.

This year at Word of Life there were over 15 married students. It is truly wonderful to see couples coming to the Bible Institute wanting to study God’s word in depth for a year. Because these students live off campus, it is sometimes difficult to drive back and forth to classes. But they don’t have to worry about getting demerits outside of classes! Credit should be given to them because it’s not easy to balance school, work and for some even a family. The married students include: Gary Armstrong, Anette & Robert Bulmer, Danny Cagle, Reid Curry, Daniel Desmarais, Angela & Victor Doucet, Troy Good, David Miner III, Jason & Tanya Nusbaum, Thomas Sand, Jeff & Elaine Sanders, Craig Watson, and Edward Woosley.

A Daniel Desmarais, Craig Watson, Robert Bulmer, Angela & Victor Doucet, Anette Bulmer, Jeff & Elaine Sanders A A Reid even takes April to work. A A ►Married students get together to play some ball.

‘People’s Corner The Psalmist David said, “In the morning, O Lord, Thou wilt hear my voice; In the morning I will order my prayer to Thee and eagerly watch.” Our early morning time with the Lord is indeed a privilege, and so often is the sole reason for making it through the day. Yet not only is this a time of gathering strength for the day, it is a time of remembering the truths that God has already taught us, and discovering new things about Him that we did not know before. We search His Word, and He searches our hearts. These pages are dedicated to Him.

Romand 12:1-8 Romans 12:1-2 are my life verses, but 12:1-8 are awesome. It talks about presenting your body as a living sacrifice acceptable unto God. He also gives each of His children gifts and we are to use them wisely. God loved us so much to send His Son to die for us. The least we can do is to love Him enough to want to serve Him. Joy M. Romans 8:28 This verse is my favorite verse. It says so much in just a few sentences. Whenever I don’t understand why I am going through what I am going through, this verse gives me the encouragement I need to have in order to make it through the day. Stacy Bugay

Romans 20-23 It brings joy to know and reflect what I was and what I am now...A child of God, heaven bound! Breathing in the depth of His truths. Feeling comforted by knowing and understanding foundations I believe. Peeling into the knowledge layer by layer, discovering the vastness of my Savior’s love. Believing is not just syllables...being transformed, as the soul is molded inward out. We will attempt to grasp every word echoed from the mouth of God’s messenger. Intake depending solely on me...refreshed digest, seeking His face though it's colors are many, and its spectrum is wide, it is nonetheless one graceful arch of hope over a storm-darkened planet, varied in it’s appeal...singular in it’s beauty. Romans 9:19-26 The potter has the power to control the shaping of the clay. The clay does not have the right to ask the potter why it was made the way it is! The same is true with Christ! He is daily molding and shaping us! I am in His hands! Too often I find myself questioning God, my potter, for the way He has made me! I have no right to because I am not the one in control and that is hard! I need to quit trying to jump off the wheel and allow God to shape and mold me into what He wants me to be! Becky Uminn

Romans L4:1-6; I Corinthians 8 There are many things in today’s society that Christians feel aren't wrong to take part in. It may not say in the Bible that it is wrong to do it, but it is a sin to cause another Christian to stumble. I know for sure that if you dwell on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report (Philipians 4:8) you do not have to worry about causing a fellow Christian to stumble. Dave J. Spencer

Romans 12: 9-15 I know through these verses that my thoughts, words, and actions should only be from God. Anything else is evil! And to also encourage my brother in Christ, just the same as I would want to be encouraged. Ryan D’Aries

Romans 14:7-12 A lot of people these days judge people for what they do or do not have, the way they act, etc. In this passage of Scripture it dearly states not to judge people because in the end God judges all of us. So, since we are God's children, we need to live for Him and not judge people. Tins passage came clear to me that we can all apply it to our lives. Kellie MacKay

Proverbs 18:22 "He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord." On this day 1was 2 weeks away from marrying my wife, April. The Lord reminded me, inspite of all the stress of school, job, & wedding plans, that He always provides for me. And soon, He’d provide for me a wife. Soon I would obtain joy and favor from the Lord. Praise His holy name! Reid Curry

e ne of the distinct goals of Word of Life Bible Institute is to prepare the student for a life of ministry. No matter what the future directive of the student, they are each laying a founda tion of ministry upon which they can build in the days to come. Such preparation goes beyond the classroom and takes the Word of God into the world in which the student can apply its truth. Some will witness, some will disciple, and I still others will develop relationships, but all ' will mirror their Savior as they serve those in need of the experience of His love. For we know that Christ did not come to heal the well, but instead to restore health to the sick. And so it is with the WOLBI student body as they take the love of Christ to the chur ches, prisons, street corners, and the market place. Effective ministry takes commitment and such commitment can be found in the hearts of the students that strive to reach their world and step up into the leadership of the next generation, ready to lead the way. Through a variety of creative ministry op portunities, students develop the skills and discipline needed to follow through on their ministry commitments. Once a life is seen I changed or a report is heard of the effect that ministry has had on an individual, the stu dent's commitment deepens and the burden I to give of one's self becomes even more I; intense. fl Within the ministry department there area a number of practical goals, but at the heart iHj of the entire department lies the realization I that if we are to be successful fishers of men, I I we must first lay the foundation of commit- r ment that only Christ could demonstrate. I
