Word of Life Bible Institute Yearbook 1998

‘Rescue lUission The Word of Life Bible Institute Rescue Mission Ministry is one that focuses on men who are “down and out,” as the saying goes. These men have very little to nothing of material value. Some are there through no fault of their own and others are battling addictions to drugs and alchohol. The students go every weekend to minister to men in the two locations: one in Albany and one in Schenectady. They eat and sleep at the mission with the men who live there or are only staying there temporarily. They control the front desk and occasionally help with serving meals. Their main job is to interact with the men and be transparent with them. The main focus is to bring them to Christ, but they must first help to meet their physical needs in order to meet the spiritual.

Rescue Mission: Kyle Dowley, John Sandau, Keith Carpen ter, Todd Maki

Yearbook interview with Todd Maki YB: What is the over-all focus of the rescue mission? TM: To get aquainted with the culture, attitude, bur dens, and trials of men who have very harsh circumstan ces. YB: What is the goal of the Rescue Mission Ministry? TM: Our goal is to show them the real riches of this life by trying to demonstrate it through our life and showing them how they can do the same. YB: How do you interact with the men? TM: I dress the same and act the same as I would any where else. They can see right through a facad. YB: What is the spiritual condition of the men at the mission? TM: Alot of them are saved with a simple child like faith and still others are very knowledgeable of the word. TM: The biggest lesson that I’ve learned by being there is how much prejudice that we can have as humans to view some people as being worth more than others.

Yearbook intervieiv with Johnny Sandau YB: What can you expect when you first arrive at the Mission? JS: I first meet with the staff to get updated, then I’ll talk to some of the guys to find out what they’ve been getting out of the Bible. YB: What are your responsibilies? JS: I check the guys in that come from the streets and share the gospel with them. I also cook Sunday breakfast and do one-on-one discipleship. YB: Why did you choose Rescue Mission and what have you learned? JS: I’ve always had a desire to work with a Rescue Mission and there’s not enough space in here to tell you all that I’ve learned. But one thing I’ve learned is that I have to be totally controlled by the Holy Spirit in order to be effective.
