THE REAL SECRET TO LONG-TERM WEIGHT LOSS & WELLNESS Foster Fit and Feeling Fantastic
Honestly, one day I just got tired of getting older, fatter, and sicker. Though I wasn’t ill, I knew it was creeping up after talking to countless women who were middle-aged and beginning to feel it. When I looked in the mirror, I saw the pounds adding up — 5 here, 10 the following year, until all those seemingly small 5-pound gains weren’t so little anymore. My baby weight was still hanging around a full decade after having my last child. I had had enough and decided to take control of my health, not just for my body, but for my future. That mirror moment changed everything, and now, as a fitness instructor, I help other women with their health and nutrition. National Women’s Health & Fitness Day is on Sept. 23, and it’s the perfect time to change your life and transform your wellness. This is your day, and I even have a brand new book out to help guide you through it. My fitness journey started on Jan. 3, 2012. I had decided that when the new gym near me opened, I’d be there ready to take classes and learn. I was feeling great, and in just six months, an instructor told me I should become a trainer. Now, I travel to teach many different modalities. From Zumba to group classes, kickboxing to the Silver Sneakers program, I’ve had the privilege of helping women of all ages discover their strength, rebuild their confidence, and switch their entire mindset about what health really means. Over the years, I’ve heard all the common misconceptions about women’s fitness as we age — that we will gain belly weight, it’s hard to shed pounds, and we don’t have time to eat well. The truth is that it’s just a balancing act, and each health step you take motivates you to take another. Your diet is a crucial element of your health plan, and as a Zumba Plate and Noom nutrition coach, I can help you take the guesswork out of meals. I provide complete meal plans and shopping lists tailored to each individual.
Along with fitness and nutrition, I’m a personal development coach. I was first introduced to the concept of neuro-encoding when I worked with the author Joseph McClendon III. This process teaches you to reprogram how your brain thinks about things. Mindset is everything when you’re tackling fitness and health
goals. You want to change, but you still want to eat fried chicken. You can live a life where you enjoy that treat if you do choose to have it, but you can also choose not to have it without missing it. Watching women who were successful in my classes, I’ve discovered that the ones most likely to keep the weight off were those with the right mindset. Losing weight is no mystery; you find resources everywhere you turn. The people who had success were those who identified as fit people who eat right and surround themselves with a community focused on healthy lifestyles. I provide group coaching, which can help you organically find that network of like-minded people who will encourage you to keep going. My new book, “The Foster Fit Method,” is about the mindset change that makes lasting transformation possible. It’s not just about what you eat or how you move; it’s about how you think about yourself and your potential. I’ll walk you through the tools, habits,
and mindset shifts that helped me and so many other women go from feeling stuck to strong, confident, and healthy. Whether you’re just getting started or getting back on track, this book can be your road map. The right fitness plan doesn’t just focus on the ideal weight; it’s about your life, energy, and legacy. It’s never too late to become the healthiest version of yourself. Let’s do this together, ladies!

WHAT IS BLACK AUGUST?
resistance against the prison system. Prison guards killed him in 1971, when he allegedly tried to escape, though stories from the authorities were not consistent. Both of the brothers’ deaths left a lasting mark on the Black Liberation movement. Black August became a time to honor those who resisted systemic racism from within and beyond prison walls. Though it’s not widely commercialized, the observance is held close by grassroots organizers and scholars today. AUGUST HAS ALWAYS BEEN SIGNIFICANT. August is a significant time in Black history, with many crucial moments that sparked justice and movement. In August 1619, the first group of enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia. In 1955, a group of white men brutally murdered 14-year-old Emmett Till in Mississippi. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on Aug. 28, 1963. Even in more modern times, August saw the nomination of America’s first Black president in 2008, and on Aug. 26, 2016, NFL player Colin Kaepernick first protested police brutality during the national anthem. WHY BLACK AUGUST STILL MATTERS. The issues that Black August was born out of in the 1970s haven’t gone away; they have evolved. Though we have made a lot of progress, many of the same challenges, like mass incarceration, unequal access to opportunity, and police brutality, still impact Black communities. This long legacy of Black resistance lives on in movements like Black Lives Matter, and its impacts can still be seen in many of the rights and freedoms we have today, hard-won victories that continue to shape American life. Black August reminds us of what collective action can achieve, and it lives on in modern organizers, educators, and artists who continue to push for a more just future. As we honor the past, Black August challenges us to stay informed and keep moving toward the future our ancestors fought so hard for. HONORING RESISTANCE, IGNITING CHANGE
Each August, communities across the U.S. pause to honor a month of remembrance known as Black
August. It’s a time to reflect on the lives and legacies of black freedom fighters, political prisoners, and grassroots organizers who stood against systemic racism and state
violence. Born out of the prison resistance movement of the 1970s, this lesser-known observance is both a memorial and a call to action. It’s a mirror to the present, and a reminder that many of the rights we have today, like voting protections, desegregation, and fair housing, were only achieved through decades of organizing, sacrifice, and collective struggle. Looking back on the Civil Rights and Black Power movements of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s, you can see how today’s activism draws strength from that lineage, still fighting for justice, peace, and liberation for all. WHAT IS BLACK AUGUST? Black August started in the 1970s inside San Quentin Prison as a response to the murder of Black Panther George Jackson and his 17-year-old brother Jonathan Peter Jackson. George Jackson was imprisoned for allegedly stealing $70 and would go on to start the San Quentin Prison’s Black Panther chapter. In 1970, he and several others were accused without evidence in the death of a prison guard and sent to Soledad Prison, where he faced the death penalty. A few months later, his younger brother Jonathan organized what would become known as the Marin County Courthouse Slave Rebellion. They took several hostages in an attempt to free the men and expose the brutally racist conditions in California prisons. Jonathan and two others were killed in the shootout, and the only surviving member of their group, lawyer Ruchell “Cinque” Magee, would spend the remainder of his life as a political prisoner, only released in 2023 and passing away 80 days later. George Jackson would go on to tell his brother’s story and become a voice of

MAKING FITNESS FUN FOR EVERYONE The Family That Sweats Together, Stays Together
Ready to turn family time into flexing time? Staying active and healthy doesn’t have to mean dragging everyone to the gym for endless push-ups or eating kale every day. With a bit of imagination and a team effort, the whole family can make fitness fun and celebrate gains together. From turning laundry chores into speed-folding competitions to jamming out in the living room as a cardio workout, building healthy habits is easier when you’re with the ones you love and laughing! MOP TILL YOU DROP Chores may not be everyone’s favorite activity — that is, until you turn them into high-energy games that work up a sweat. Many household tasks have physical elements that can be a form of entertaining exercise. You could challenge your family to a sweep off, where everyone races with their broom to see who can clean the floor the fastest. Maybe you want to do some laundry lunges while washing clothes or see who can pick up the most toys in the shortest amount of time. Not only will everyone be more motivated to get their household to-do list done, but it will also help everyone get their reps in without noticing. FIT AND FUN Staying in shape will happen naturally if you carve out time for family activities that include a little movement. Daily walks after dinner are
low-impact, get everyone outside, and are an easy way to get your steps in. Instead of driving to the library or park, ride bikes to get there so everyone reaps the benefits of cycling, such as improved heart health and better balance. Your children
might enjoy trying out scooters or roller skates to get around the neighborhood.
STIR UP GOOD HABITS Proper nutrition is a key ingredient in a healthy lifestyle. Commit to cooking together as a family at least once a week to get everyone excited about eating right. Have the kids help plan the entree, pick out fresh veggies at the store, measure ingredients, or set the table. Making everyone feel included in meal planning helps them take ownership of their habits and learn how to prepare well-balanced diets.

If a trek through timeless volcanic landscapes dotted with crater lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs, plus access to awe-inspiring marine life sounds inviting, the Azores may be the vacation spot for you! The Azores are an increasingly popular tourist destination, often called “the Hawaii of Europe” for their remote mid-ocean location and volcanic origins. The archipelago encompasses nine major islands 1,000 miles off the coast of Portugal and is one of the best whale-watching sites in the world. Visitors should plan their trip from the end of April to the beginning of May to view larger migratory species, such as the blue whale. The rocky shorelines of the Azores ascend as high as 7,713 feet atop the Ponta de Pico on the island of Pico. The islands’ untamed beauty offers plenty of outdoor activities, from kayaking to hiking. The climate is
subtropical, with year-round temperatures ranging from 57 to 71 degrees Fahrenheit. Religious festivals and traditional holidays abound on these predominantly Roman Catholic islands, an autonomous region of Portugal. Beyond that, however, the islands’ culture, dialect, and cuisine vary widely. The largest island, São Miguel, is home to numerous hot springs and Europe’s only two tea plantations. An emblematic nature area, Sete Cidades, includes the famed Lagoa Azul (blue lagoon) and Lagoa Verde (green lagoon). Numerous healing hot springs in Furnas offer opportunities for wellness and relaxation seekers. Ilheu de Vila Franca, a flooded crater islet accessible from the southern shore of São Miguel, offers exceptional visibility of unique marine life, plus snorkeling, swimming, and cliff diving.
Wine lovers will enjoy the island of Pico, where vintners produce the islands’ complex volcanic wines. The Azores Wine Company offers tastings, tours, and overnight stays. The island of Santa Maria has the only white- sand beaches in the region. And Faial Island’s bountiful hydrangea gardens have earned it the nickname “The Blue Island.” Foodies will also enjoy famous local foods, including octopus stewed in wine, kale soup, fried mackerel, and fresh yogurt and cheeses. Taken together, the Azores have something to delight any traveler.
