We've been making some headlines lately! In October 2022, we took our first step toward construction of our new Planetarium & Astronomy Center. Our historic Gregory- Maksutov Telescope was craned out of our old observatory to begin its journey to the Astronomical Lyceum in New Mexico. There the telescope will remain on long-term loan for safekeeping and continued use. The Lyceum was chosen to maintain the telescope while still facilitating joint dark-sky viewing in our Planetarium and classroom spaces through the magic of technology.

• The Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s Planetarium & Astronomy Center is the second phase of our Capital Campaign that will bring our Planetarium and Observatory programs together under one roof for the first time in our history. • Two modern classroom spaces will further emphasize physical science through the STEAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Astronomy and Math), supporting both the State of Connecticut Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. • Our new Planetarium will have theater-style, articulated seating for 100 with additional space to function as an auditorium for community use and collaborative events.

We will create a beautiful and integrated site for the Planetarium & Astronomy Center elegantly accessed by a nature walk up the hill from the Farmhouse. This handsome new facility will feature: • A 100-seat planetarium theatre PRESENTATION GALA EVENT
• An open-air, roll-back roof observation deck with lunar and solar telescopes • A welcoming lobby gallery with guest reception and a boutique Sky Shop • Two school group and program classrooms as well as astronomy and technology offices • Beautiful outdoor terraces connecting our guests to the natural world • We will finally have an elevator and ADA compliant facilities that will echo the finishes of our award-winning 2018 Knobloch Family Farmhouse We welcome support from all who stand behind our community’s leading projects. Join us in the Bendel Galleries where you will create your own colorful still life inspired by Sophy’s paintings. You will be guided on tools and techniques you can use to create interesting compositions using a variety of media such as watercolor, colored pencils, collage, and more. overseas. Following the death of her husband Melville in 1949, her physician instructed her to “slow down,” so two years later, the self-taught painter began painting daily. Regensburg’s subjects were the everyday objects that surrounded her, including fresh groceries, antique vases, and patterned tablecloths. She painted every day in the corner of her bedroom in the same chair, choosing casein as her preferred medium as she didn’t care for the smell of turpentine required for working with oils. Despite being labeled a naive painter – a label she abhorred during her lifetime – her paintings define the cultural zeitgeist of her era with a palpable mid-century feel. Featuring crisp outlines, saturated colors, meticulous details, and a flattened perspective that gives little distinction between foreground and background, her compositions are reminiscent of Golden Age Dutch still-lifes, with patterning that echoes her lifelong passion and practice in the fiber arts as an avid knitter, quilter, hooked-rug maker, and needle pointer. What started as a Curator’s pipedream has evolved into the very first museum exhibition celebrating artist Sophy Regensburg’s profound and inspiring 20-year career. While mining the Stamford Museum & Nature Center’s permanent collection, Curator of Collections & Exhibitions Maeve Lawler discovered five of the artist’s core works, which sparked the idea and foundation for a more extensive, dedicated exhibition. Regensburg, who began painting at the age of 67 while living on the Upper East Side in New York City, produced more than 500 works of art over two decades. She was renowned for her vivid still-life scenes depicting objects culled from her everyday world – a pitcher of tulips, a plate of shucked oysters, a slice of cherry pie. Born in 1885 to a prominent New York City family, Sophy Pollak Regensburg studied drawing at The Chase Art School under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri in her youth. During the war, Sophy was actively involved in support efforts: During WWI, she drove an ambulance in New York City transporting wounded soldiers to the hospital, and during WWII, she knitted socks for soldiers

on view April 14 – September 4, 2023 Opening Reception on Thursday, April 13 | 5–7 PM NANCY MACKO: THE FRAGILE BEE Since the early nineties , Nancy Macko has drawn upon images of the honeybee society to explore the relationships between art, science, technology, and ancient matriarchal cultures. In her most recent exhibition, The Fragile Bee , Macko combines painting, printmaking, digital media, photography, video, and installation elements to create a unique visual language. This combination of media allows her to examine and respond to issues related to eco-feminism and nature, as well as to explore her interest in mathematics and prime numbers, in which she attempts to make the implicit connections between nature and technology explicit. The Fragile Bee also explores the artist’s love of plants, and her images investigate the botany world as seen through the honeybee’s eyes. She photographs botanical specimens that the honeybee pollinates and visually records nature's exquisite beauty, fragility, and often, cruelty. The recent decline in the honeybee population and, more broadly, the idea of life and death in nature are prevalent themes in her work. Macko is deeply concerned with the disappearance of honeybees and through her art seeks to raise awareness regarding the vulnerability of their ecosystem.

COLLECTIONS SPOTLIGHT
Sophy Regensburg didn’t begin painting until she was 67, when she started a captivating late-in-life career like her contemporary Grandma Moses. She spent the last two decades of her life painting daily in her bedroom, inspired by the objects and scenes surrounding her world on the Upper East Side. Throughout her short but prolific career, Regensburg mastered the still-life and gained the attention of the New York City art world.
Born in 1885 in New York City to upper-class parents Charles Noah Pollak and Rachel Pollak, Regensburg always had a creative streak. She studied drawing at The Chase Art School in Manhattan under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. In 1908 she married cigar manufacturer Melville E. Regensburg and settled into their apartment at 200 East 71 st Street. The artist had three children, Elizabeth Pollak Zimmerman, Charles Pollak Regensburg and Mary Regensburg Feist, who became a successful, nationally recognized artist herself. Regensburg was highly skilled in the fiber arts, making quilts, needlepoint and knit pieces, and hooked rugs throughout her life. Her love for patterning translates directly to her detailed paintings that often include at least one decorative element, such as the delicate lace tablecloth seen in Fresh Shrimps . Quite unusually, Regensburg arrived at her mature style immediately; her brilliantly composed paintings exhibit her fantastic eye for color, seen in the beautifully rendered shades of orange and pink in the crustaceans of this work. Regensburg once said, “I paint whatever is in the refrigerator.” Shrimp was, charmingly, a common theme in her work, and Fresh Shrimps reflects what the artist would have had on hand in her apartment. Regensburg’s paintings capture the zeitgeist of mid-century America, particularly in this painting, as shrimp cocktail was considered a trendy appetizer in the 1960s.

FIY: FARM IT YOURSELF Extreme Maple Syrup MEMBERS ONLY: Session I: Saturday, February 25 Session II: Saturday, March 4 2:30 – 4 pm
Join us for a special behind-the-scenes look at our Maple Syrup operation and get to help with some of the daily tasks that go into turning our sap into syrup! Help to collect sap and measure how much sugar is in it, learn to use our auger to drill tap holes, tour our sugarbush, and more! See the process of turning sap into syrup with our evaporator and do a taste test of the different grades to see which one you like best! We’ll end our program with a special treat featuring our own maple syrup. Meet at the Sugar House + Cidery. Limited to 16 participants. All attendees over 3 require a ticket. Members: $12/person
OUTDOOR ADVENTURES
Winter Tracks & Signs Workshop Saturday, January 21 2 – 3:30 pm Discover how to identify tracks and signs of common wildlife through both in-classroom activities and out on the trail. Make your own plaster track cast to take home and test your skills on our track trivia on the trails. We’ll see which winter wildlife has been active in the forest. Part of the program will be on the trails, so please dress accordingly. Class is limited to 10 children per session. One adult may attend with each child at no charge. SM&NC's Heckscher WILD! building at was opened in 2015 and is home to our exotic animals. The Junior WILD! Keeper program gives participants a hands-on experience in the care, feeding, and enrichment of these animals. After completing the class, participants will then choose a later date for more in-depth training with our animal care staff. Upon successful completion of both the class and training, participants will then be eligible to volunteer with the animals in the Heckscher WILD! exhibit. Program fee includes the initial session and an in-depth training session with staff (will be individually scheduled on a mutually agreeable day). Limited to 5 participants for initial training. Caring for Exotic Critters For participants who have enjoyed our Caring for Critters programs at Heckscher Farm, we are thrilled to announce a new addition – Caring for Exotic Critters! Work with our exotic animals, like tortoises and chinchillas, in small group-tailored settings during Heckscher WILD!'s closed hours. Programs are approximately 45 minutes. Limited to 2 participants and caregivers per session. Please register only the main participant for this program. One caregiver per registrant is included in registration. Animals for All programs remain free of charge thanks to the support of our generous grantors, the Dorr Foundation, Generation Impact, New Canaan Community Foundation, and the Abilis Foundation. Sunday, January 22 | 3:00 pm in our Knobloch Family Farmhouse MUSICAL PROGRAM TO INCLUDE: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K.516 Johannes Brahms String Quintet No. 1 in F Major, Op.88 Brahms followed Mozart’s lead in adding a second viola to the standard string quartet format. These two pieces, one dark and melancholic, the other full of genial and vigorous vitality, are among the finest of their kind.
