FALL 2022
TIMES ARE A-CHANGING
We are now in the new New York. The city is awakening but it feels different. You can see the changes. Some things have remained the same while other things have changed. Some old haunts have closed and yet new places have opened. Life continues. You have to be grateful if you have your health, your family is intact and there is a source of income. After that everything is a bonus. Time continually moves by quickly. Hard to believe that the year 2000 was almost 23 years ago. 2022 has zoomed by and we are now approaching Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before you can bat an eye 2023 will be here with another year gone by. Most people set their goals in January for the New Year. A better plan is to formulate what you want to accomplish in 2023 NOW. Why wait? You have the time to contemplate and institute the changes you want. Doing this in October gives you a head start so you’ll already be in gear moving forward before the New Year arrives. Where do you want to be in a 2024? What are you willing to do to get there? With no goals, no plan there can be no action and no success. You’re just traveling down the river of life and reacting to whatever is thrown in your path. With no plan there is no destination. How can you arrive if you don’t know where you want to go. The journey is never in a straight line, you will have to make corrections as you progress. The most important action is to DECIDE what you want. Making decisions is the most important thing for progress. Even making the wrong decision is better than no decision. Those who succeed make decisions quickly and are not afraid if their decisions are wrong. If wrong they correct quickly and learn from the experience.
There is no reason to reinvent the wheel. There is ample knowledge to guide you. Sometimes you have to pay for the knowledge but the funds spent will be made up in avoiding missteps. However, you will never have all the information so you will have to move based on faith. Faith in yourself to succeed. You never give up. The saying if at first you don’t succeed you try, try again is real. Perseverance and determination are required. You have to overcome fear which is false evidence that appears real. Fear is based on the future. The future is always unknown and you cannot control it. You can only act in the present moment. Your future is determined by what you do NOW. If you act now and correct when necessary you will have a much stronger chance of achieving what you want. If you’re going to do it you might as well give it you’re all. Success is the result of continual small steps. If the task seems too great break it down into little pieces and take one chew at a time. To succeed you need to have the energy to continue. Your health is your energy. Regular exercise to strengthen your body, proper eating to supply the proper nutrients, and meditation to strengthen your inner core are all necessary. Avoid procrastination and ACT TODAY! It takes more energy to start a wheel rolling than to keep it rolling. Small wins lead to big wins leading to the accomplishment of your goals. Fulfilled goals lead to the creation of new goals leading to bigger successes.
Make the effort and enjoy the rewards.

SUBWAY SERIES I’m writing this on September 22nd and when you read this the truth will be known. Will the Mets and/or Yankees choke? With three weeks to go it’s very possible. First up the New York Metropolitans. If you’re old enough you remember the Mets jingle. "Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets, come on down and meet the Mets. Bring your kids, bring your wife bring them all for the time of your life ..." One thing about the Mets, they never fail to let you down. They’re in and then they’re out. Let’s hope they can pull it off. On October 16, 1969, I was at Shea Stadium when the Miracle Mets won game 5 and the 1969 World Series. In my life this was the closest one could come to experiencing the Roman Coliseum during days of yore. Back then by the seventh inning everyone was moving down. As soon as the last ball was caught pandemonium reigned with everyone on the field. Joan Payson’s Mets were world champions. I can still feel all the excitement more than 50 years later. The Yankees, George must be rolling over in his grave. Last time the Yankees won the World Series, 2009 more than 10 years ago. If George was alive heads would be rolling. Kind of nice that they won in the first year the new stadium opened. Yes, the new stadium was a needed improvement over the house that Ruth built. I was in Yankee stadium in 2008 and it was definitely in need of a change. Everyone is hoping that this is the year the Yankees return, but I’m a little concerned. We’ll see if my concerns are founded. The last subway series was in 2000, which at 22 years was a long time ago. I had tickets for game 7 but the series ended in 5. If there is a new subway series somehow I will snare tickets. This will be a final chance to be a part of subway baseball history if history is any indicator.
Growing up on Long Island I was a Mets fan. After graduating dental school and moving to Manhattan I became a Yankees fan. I found it easier to take the 4 train on the Upper East Side to Yankee stadium vs. the 7 train to Shea to see the Mets. I guess I’m lazy. Finally, I’m a good dad. I took my daughter to the old Yankee Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium and to Shea Stadium and Citi Field. Being a real New Yorker in the end if either the Mets or Yankees get in I’ll be rooting for them. If the miracle happens and there is a subway series I’ll go for the Mets. I connect more with the underdog. One thing is certain. When going to either stadium be prepared to pay. Four hot dogs, two soggy fries and two diet cokes, I gave my daughter 50 dollars and she said you owe me another seven. A beer is 15 dollars and when they run out of cups and make you buy a ceremonial cup instead of holding the beer in your hands its 19 dollars. I do feel bad for all Jets fans. At least the Giants get into the Super Bowl. Super Bowl three was a very long time ago and I can only wonder what Joe thinks. But with football season beginning maybe 57 will be the miracle year. Only 54 years later it would probably bring a smile to The Big Tuna who had the best winning percentage of any head coach in Jet’s franchise history.

A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PLANTING
If you notice in the reception area of the practice we have plants. They are actually alive and growing. No plastic plants here. In addition to planting plants we also plant teeth in areas of missing teeth. The planting is called implanting as in placing a piece of titanium into your jaw in the shape of a tooth’s root to allow us to restore a missing tooth with a created one that closely matches your former tooth.
tooth? Did you have a root canal procedure years ago which has now failed. The big question is; do you miss that tooth?
If so, we have an answer for you. We can replace it without disturbing your adjacent teeth. We have been doing this in the practice for more than 10 years. In the past, the standard of care in dentistry was to do a bridge. Think George Washington which consists of two towers with a suspended roadway. A bridge in dentistry where you are missing a tooth would involve reducing the two adjacent teeth next to the missing tooth and then creating a roadway or three connected teeth or crowns together to restore the missing tooth. The problem is the adjacent teeth could be decay free and now you are grinding them down to nubs. In addition it’s hard to floss between attached teeth leading to a greater chance of gum disease. The beauty of the implant is that the adjacent teeth are not touched. You are only replacing the lost tooth and once restored you will still be able to floss normally. Esthetically your new tooth will match your other teeth, and only you will know you had the procedure. Insurance generally pays for fifty percent of the procedure up to your insurance maximum. If you are missing a tooth maybe now is the time to consider a dental implant. If you have flexible spending October is usually the month to make your contribution for next year If this sounds interesting to you; give us a call today and we’ll discuss your situation.
Is there a tooth in your mouth that is now no longer present? Did you lose that tooth due to trauma as in biting on ice, a cherry or olive pit? Did you fall down and hit that

BACK TO THE SOURCE
With Halloween upon us we have all seen the movies "Dracula," "Frankenstein" and "The House on Haunted Hill," but how many of you have actually read the original stories. Recently, I read all three. The original texts are all substantially different than the actual movies. Boris Karloff is Frankenstein and Bella Lugosi is Dracula while Vincent Price is the proprietor of Hill House. When tackling "Frankenstein" from 1818 and "Dracula" from 1897 you are reading stories created in a different time. "The Haunting of Hill House" is more recent (1959) and is an easier read. So, turn out the lights, maybe the wind is blowing or there is thundering and lightening about and enjoy a little horror all to yourself.

It’s a Scary Sight
When We See Clients Leaving Benefits on the Table …
Every year, we are treated to the downright spooky sight of clients leaving their annual dental benefits on the table — benefits they have already paid for all year! That’s like throwing your hard-earned money straight in the trash. We’d hate to see that happen to you and your boo-tiful smile. That’s why we want to let you know that now’s the time to take advantage of your 2022 dental benefits or lose them forever. Make sure that you … • Have used your dental exam and preventive care appointment for the year • Used your maximum yearly allowance (because it will not roll over to next year!) • Aren’t putting off dental treatment that could be more expensive in the long run. Make an appointment now so we can get a treatment plan in place. Appointments are filling up fast, so don’t wait — give us a call today before it’s too late!
