Glenn Reit D.D.S. - Fall 2022

SUBWAY SERIES I’m writing this on September 22nd and when you read this the truth will be known. Will the Mets and/or Yankees choke? With three weeks to go it’s very possible. First up the New York Metropolitans. If you’re old enough you remember the Mets jingle. "Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets, come on down and meet the Mets. Bring your kids, bring your wife bring them all for the time of your life ..." One thing about the Mets, they never fail to let you down. They’re in and then they’re out. Let’s hope they can pull it off. On October 16, 1969, I was at Shea Stadium when the Miracle Mets won game 5 and the 1969 World Series. In my life this was the closest one could come to experiencing the Roman Coliseum during days of yore. Back then by the seventh inning everyone was moving down. As soon as the last ball was caught pandemonium reigned with everyone on the field. Joan Payson’s Mets were world champions. I can still feel all the excitement more than 50 years later. The Yankees, George must be rolling over in his grave. Last time the Yankees won the World Series, 2009 more than 10 years ago. If George was alive heads would be rolling. Kind of nice that they won in the first year the new stadium opened. Yes, the new stadium was a needed improvement over the house that Ruth built. I was in Yankee stadium in 2008 and it was definitely in need of a change. Everyone is hoping that this is the year the Yankees return, but I’m a little concerned. We’ll see if my concerns are founded. The last subway series was in 2000, which at 22 years was a long time ago. I had tickets for game 7 but the series ended in 5. If there is a new subway series somehow I will snare tickets. This will be a final chance to be a part of subway baseball history if history is any indicator.

Growing up on Long Island I was a Mets fan. After graduating dental school and moving to Manhattan I became a Yankees fan. I found it easier to take the 4 train on the Upper East Side to Yankee stadium vs. the 7 train to Shea to see the Mets. I guess I’m lazy. Finally, I’m a good dad. I took my daughter to the old Yankee Stadium and the new Yankee Stadium and to Shea Stadium and Citi Field. Being a real New Yorker in the end if either the Mets or Yankees get in I’ll be rooting for them. If the miracle happens and there is a subway series I’ll go for the Mets. I connect more with the underdog. One thing is certain. When going to either stadium be prepared to pay. Four hot dogs, two soggy fries and two diet cokes, I gave my daughter 50 dollars and she said you owe me another seven. A beer is 15 dollars and when they run out of cups and make you buy a ceremonial cup instead of holding the beer in your hands its 19 dollars. I do feel bad for all Jets fans. At least the Giants get into the Super Bowl. Super Bowl three was a very long time ago and I can only wonder what Joe thinks. But with football season beginning maybe 57 will be the miracle year. Only 54 years later it would probably bring a smile to The Big Tuna who had the best winning percentage of any head coach in Jet’s franchise history.
